I’m looking to properly engage in freelance work. If any freelance editors have advice on how to progress, I would really appreciate it!

I’ve edited a couple of things already voluntarily, and am happy to continue doing so, in order build up a portfolio of work. I’m unsure however on where to go from here, in terms of attracting more writers, or progressing the point at which I can begin to make more of a career out of freelance work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated on where to go from here please!

Also, if anyone has anything they would like editing or proofreading, please get in touch!

  • Hi Beth,
Not sure how relevant it will be to your specific field of interest but there's a #CopywritersUnite event in Leeds coming up (scroll up in the feed) that might be worth a visit...? Also another Q by Katie Gill that has some useful replies. Sending some short and upbeat speculative emails to publishers/magazines/journals/websites you'd like to work for offering your skills on a freelance basis could be a start. Even if you don't immediately get hired, asking for help is a great way to make contacts and keep yourself uppermost in people's minds. Ditto following people you'd like to work for on twitter and signing up to newsletters like the brilliant freelancewriting jobs (https://www.sianmeadeswilliams.com/freelance-writing-jobs) Try to charge something - anything - for your time and skills on the projects you have been offered. I know it's hard when it might be friends or family. Building up a portfolio on The Dots is a fast and effective (& free!) alternative to creating a whole website from scratch and it's really easy to update and change projects around when you're sending the links to potential clients, so you can personalise your offering. Best of luck with everything.
    Bella
