I'm stuck between going freelance and trying to get a job at an agency as a copywriter.

I'm more of a creative copywriter and not too sure which way to go. Not sure which way to go, or who I would speak to. (I know I need more samples in my portfolio before I do anything though!) Only thing that worries me with the agency route is I wouldn't be able to afford to do unpaid placements.

  • Hi Matt, good question! I think you can do both! One thing I would say that is freelancing requires a lot of resillience so if you have that you are already half way there! Ive been freelancing as a digital writer for almost two years now. I have a blog dedcated to helping beginner freelancers build their business: www.remireports.com I have also just launched an ecourse for beginner freelancers and am currently offering a free 1 hour strategy call with those who download the course. More on the course here: https://remireports.com/product/beginner-freelancer-e-course-remi-reports/
  • Definitely start with a job for experience and contacts. Especially now as freelance work is hard to get win. There seem to be a lot of jobs going though.
  • If you have a choice, I'd get a job over going freelance - here's why:

    - You get to work with other creatives who will help build your skills and your confidence - you may even get a creative partner

    - You get to experience the creative process - valuable for understanding how everything works

    - You get to build a network for when you're ready to go freelance - often your last employer or client is your next employer or client

If you go freelance from the start, you often have to rely on recruitment agents and that doesn't always work out. You also have to work harder at building a network.
  • @Mickey Jones I'm in the south west (Somerset) but would relocate if an oppotunity came up at the right agency!
  • Whereabouts will you be based? A lot of agencies have signed onto the Placement Poverty Pledge in London so they HAVE to pay you the London living wage. But if an agency is trying to use you for free work, they’re not great to start with anyway. Know your worth and stand your ground. Decent agencies will pay for all their placements.
  • I beleive if you find a suitable position then grab it but while goin gradually to freelance. Starting a freelance pass needs funding so a little stability within this journey will help you in the long run. Best wishes :)
  • I know how you feel! Someone said to me that when there is no opportunity, create your own! During the pandemic, while you’re in the womb of nothing, birth something from your own creative mind! You can do it.:) Sy
