I've always had a passion for writing but have only ever written for myself. Any advice on writing professionally and go about getting work?

  • Hey Ruth,

Are you talking about copywriting? If so, there are some tips in here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/lets-talk-you-vikki-ross
  • Hi Ruth, I know a great person you can go to for advice. Her name is Nina Jervis, aka Nina the Writer. You can easily find her on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ninathewriter/
  • Hi Ruth,

I'm glad there is passion. To fuel the fire, you need to hit hard on your confidence because out there is - competition. Loads of it. So gear up with the right tools, attitude and portfolio. Make a good social media presence and engage with individuals who have strong exposure to freelance cont(r)acts/opportunities. There are plenty on Twitter, Medium, etc. Focus on what sort of subjects most interest you: fashion, food, cutlure, sustainability, human rights, skincare, travel, makeup, etc. Also the type of genre you want your writing to flow in. Read diverse platforms like (to name a few): https://catapult.co/, https://gal-dem.com/, https://www.azeemamag.com/, https://www.dardishi.com/, https://guap.co.uk/ while making notes of your own observations/thoughts. Once you find your voice and decide to submit those written pieces on a volunteer then paid basis, find harmony between the nice and nasty feedback coming your way.

    Good luck!
