I want to make my portfolio more commercial or at least more appealing for employment, any suggestions?

I want to make my portfolio more comercial or at least make it more appealing for employment. After one ... and multiple job application rejection, I have started to think that maybe it is my artwork that needs to change.

I will leave my online website for you guys to have a look, if you have any suggestions what I should do, or projects I should look at or create please let me know.

Can't wait to hear the suggestions :)

  • @Kim Whyte thanks for the feedback and supportive words :). I thought about that, putting the image bigger but someone has advised me otherwise. To keep them small, for fast viewing and if the person is interested they could always click on the image for full screen.
  • Hi Dora,

Firstly, your photography is amazing – really, really strong. I would group your work into illustration and photography. Some of your projects that are presented in grid view would benefit from some padding between them to do them justice. I would make some of your images larger if possible. Your work is great and I don't think you need to change anything. Keep applying for jobs, keep plugging away and building your network. There is unprecedented competition in the job market this year so please don't lose heart that it's taking longer to get more positive responses. You will get there!
  • @Nicholas Castle Thanks for the feedback, It was very useful information I will keep that in mind. To clear discipline categorize is also a good idea :). I have adjusted that grammatical error, thanks for pointing it out :)
  • Hi Dora,

Don't be too hard on yourself. Parts of the creative industry are really struggling at this moment in time. Securing paid work or employment is challenging.

When you're applying for a role with an agency or a company, ask yourself 'why'? What is it that you like about them or their work. What can YOU offer THEM. What value can you add? What have you seen them do recently that has resonated with you? Tell them about it. Bring yourself to life. Plus, everyone likes to be told they're producing great work that others are engaging with.

So, a couple of thoughts. Your portfolio is pretty diverse. That's not a bad thing. What I would like as a viewer of your work is really clear discipline categorization. Is 'this' project focusing on your design, illustration or photography. Give me this information when I role my cursor over the project thumbnail. You could also think about having specific design, illustration and photography subsections to your website. This will save me/the viewer time.

I like the fact that you've included concepts on your D&AD project. This gives me a feel for how you tackle a brief.

Honestly, I don't think your artwork needs to change, I think you could tighten a few things up and really focus on WHO receives your portfolio.

    Best wishes,
    Nick

P.S. There is a grammatical error in this sentence:
Many of this skills were self-structured based on the will to define a self-identity inside the graphic design field.

    I'd amend that.
