I want to start finding work in London so when I eventually move there I have a base. Any suggestions on how to get the ball rolling?

  • Hi Hannah,

I would review a few of companies that you really would like to work for, find out the contacts you need to reach (Via LinkedIn or their website) and create something that will showcase your talents and give those people an idea of the effort you put in together with your talent. In my experience, the majority recruiters will want you in the city ready at a moment's notice, when I was returning to London and the recruiters knew that I didn't get much response. Once I was here it was a very different story, I had calls, interviews, and meetings where I quickly found a role that I wanted. But not everyone can afford to take the risk.

Whatever you create will be good practice and more content for your portfolio anyway so it is a good exercise. Think of maybe an ongoing direct mail (A newsletter mailed to the person) that gives you insight into the industry that you want to work. It is a chance for you to work on a live project and do it the way you want. Remember, the people you are probably trying to reach get hundreds if not thousands of CV's, what can you do to stand out?

    I hope that helps.
    Good luck, Alan.
  • Hi Hannah,
I would get in touch with recruitment agencies in London first of all.
Get your CV across to them so they have you on their books.
