Is there anyone who is a ADHDer or Autistic? How were you able to enter and thrive in the creative industry?

What are some helpful methods?

  • Hi Joyce! What a great question and super nice to see such supportive responses from likeminded people! I have recently been getting diagnosed with Autism. I have always worked full time in the creative industry and never realised why I would burn out so quickly.

Having the right environment that supports your needs is probably the most important factor. Making sure your management know and also are aware of anything that can potentially trigger you or a meltdown! Having access to earphones etc and a safe space is helpful too, these are what particularly help me when I’m feeling anxious.

I still am learning about what triggers me and how I can help myself, so keeping management up to date with anything that comes up that potentially triggers you is advisable too!

I also do think freelance is a great option for us too as you can pick your own hours. Potentially even looking for remote work or semi remote.

I’m sure you will do amazing, believe in yourself - you can do it!
  • Hi Joyce,

I do have asperger and I would say the easiest to find your way with austistic conditions is freelance, remote / flexible workspace. When I started I did have the struggle with the 9-5, it also been a problem when I was in high school till I didn't become private student. I remember quite often wondered if anyone else feels such a pain abiut walking into an office every single day, but see the word is changing and turns out might the system was wrong.

So would recommend you to find a flexible working environment and let hr know that you may require some extra flexibility for your conditions.
  • Hi Joyce, I was diagnoed with ADD when I was a child, though I'm in the process of being re-diagnosed for Austism. Honestly it's an odd one, as it really depends on the people you work with.

As long as you're around the right people, you'll excel. I've struggled in some places as they haven't taken the time or bothered to listen when I told them I was struggling/ or didn't understand. Also the Intersection of me being bipoc adds another dimention my working life experiance.

As you're new, make sure that the place is set up for Jr's/ entry level folk and good luck, you'll kill it!
