Just seen someone ask for 3 Illustrations for £30 by Sunday... I think Fiverr has given people ridiculous expectations on pricing.

  • So great to hear from everyone - this is why it's so important for artists to unite! Know your worth!!
  • These clients have always existed, Fiverr and it’s ilk have just given them a voice and active encouragement.

We’ve not been fighting for years to keep the arts in schools and to combat cuts to the arts because people value us. The whole industry is falling for it. Else we wouldn’t see junior roles turned inaccessible to junior creatives.

And as long as their are cheap, entitled clients there will be platforms emerging – be it 99designs, Reedsy, Upwork, et all – that try to capitalise on devaluing creative professionals.
  • Someone mentioned this platform to me recently. Now that I’ve seen this will not go near it. You are so right tech start ups are exploiting and taking rights away. It’s the same process with all these apps tbh whether you are selling an item on Depop, using a food delivery app or endlessly trying to keep up with the Instagram algorithm against a tide of advertisers Just with that one seems more blatant.
We need to stand strong !
  • @Garry Tipping Very tempting to send 3 napkin drawings!
  • @Jhonny Núñez 3 Illustrations! Something that would take quite a few hours! My jaw was on the floor when I saw the pay.
  • @Michael Holland Absolutely - we can't be expected to compete with people working for the absolute bare minimum - who are working in completely different economies to us. It sets a precedent that our work really isn't as valuable as other work. Very concerning!
  • I've dumped all these platforms, there is currently a rising debate in Scandinavia, around how certain tech companies essentially are sneaking in the backdoor the erosion of our basic working rights.
I have found it much more valuable to do the outreach work yourself. It can be uphill-work first, but stronger relations/more reliable in the longterm.
