  • I read your other post and now this one.

As someone who has shifted careers more than 3 times already in 20 years, I can assure you it all happened without any prior planning or following any particular process.

I started my career having very little confidence in my skills and abilities as an engineer and found myself doing a job as a technician for medical equipment.

    How did it happen?

I got a call from a friend of mine who works for a businessperson who runs multiple businesses. He was looking for an engineer for his medical equipment company. I had no idea how medical equipment functioned, but I felt I could learn, especially that this job was recommended by a friend.

Three years later, I left the job, and pursued a master's degree in HR. Having a bachelors in engineering, and 3 years of work experience in biomedical engineering, I was approached again by the same business owner i worked for but this time his friend is looking for an engineer who wants to work in HR.

Two years later I left this job and found out that I am a good trainer, so I started a part-time job as an HR trainer. Shortly after I was approached by a consulting firm looking for an HR consultant, I left this job after 1 year.

During that time, social media was gaining popularity among businesses and I used to spend most of my day on facebook. A friend of mine called me saying our agency is looking for a social media pro. I was nothing close to a pro in social media, but I accepted the job and worked at an agency handling a brand on social media for 4 years.

At the age of 34, I felt I gained experience in different industries, but I fell in love with marketing after my agency experience, so I decided to run my own digital marketing consultancy. I did that happily for 5 years.

Three years ago, we suffered a huge financial crisis back home and took a random flight to London to continue my business from there.

Running out of money rapidly, I had to go back to a full-time job and luckily it was in an agency. So, I stayed in digital marketing but pivoted into SEO. I am happy but none of the above happened by following any plan.

If there is one thing that worked really well for me, it's having so many friends and connections in different industries, and they approached me randomly because I was there at the right time but never for the right position, but the strong relationship and trust in my abilities gave them confidence that I can do the job.

Now, if you want to move into the fashion industry, all you need is a strong connection there. Dig deep into your contacts and connections, and try to speak to more than 5-10 contacts and see if you can strike a conversation by showing your interest in this industry and what value you can add.

The position won't be an ideal one at first, but if it allows you to set a foot in the industry that's half the road to your ideal position (production).

Spend time around people in the fashion industry and strengthen your relationship with them so they remember you when they have any opening.

That's how I got into marketing by really being around marketeers.

    Hope this help?
