Looking for Freelance advice-What have your experiences been using an Umbrella Company to handle your pay from invoicing?

Could you recommend any reputable companies that you've worked with in the past?

Could you list a few pros and cons as to why you chose that route, rather than registering as a Sole Trader and handling it yourself for example?

Fairly new to the world of Freelancing, just picking up odd jobs alongside of my regular job- looking to wrap my head around a few things and make sure I'm getting my practice right.

Any help or links to useful resources would be greatly appreciated!

The response to help out on here has been ovewhelming!
  • From personal experience I can say hiring an accountant is better than going with a company, that way you stay in control of your finances and earnings
  • Hi Aaron,
Congrats on the move! Freelancing has lots of pros and cons, umbrella companies have mainly cons in my eyes. If you need help with accounting perhaps try apps like quickbooks or yolt, if you'd prefer talking to a person I can introduce you to a great accountant.

Ltd vs Sole trader.. depends what kind of clients you work with really. Many bigger companies won't work with sole trader, and only with LTDs. But in April the new tax IR35 is coming out and that will have no effect on sole traders. Wether or not that will change large companie' opinion, I dont know.

    Hope that helped.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Aaron,
I have recently left freelancing, but while I was I found the best approach was as a limited company, it's very easy to set up and you can leave all the tricky tax stuff to your accountant.
I used these guys to set up my company-

    hope that's some help
