Travels blogs (post-Covid). Help me rethink them: VR integration? Live chats with locals? Itinerary inspired by MBTI results? Amuse me!

Ah the good old' travel blog...
How do we revolt against the proliferation of "10 things you MUST see in ____"'s, and "A __-day itinerary of ____", and "____, an off-the-beaten trail guide."

Not complaining! They're amazing. Many times I've known EXACTLY what to do, where to go, and who to talk to on my travels because of the travel blogger movement.
I too, am guilty of feeding travel bloggers affiliate marketing brownie points...

Enforced anti-travelling, however, has got me to reflect on the daftness of letting them dictate my trips, sucking them of any true adventurousness and spontaneity.

I wanted to reach out to the creative community to pick your brains.
How can we shovel into the notion of 'online travel guides' to dig a little deeper, trascend the internet experience and really help 'free' the readers?

  • Hello. As a reputable online travel agency, Justfly has partnered with major airlines and hotel chains to ensure that their customers get the best deals, which is why many use their services. With Justfly you can be sure that your travel plans are in good hands and that the client will be supported throughout the journey, which is why many people rate their services highly in the reviews here https://justfly.pissedconsumer.com/review.html and are confident that they will not let them down.
  • I wonder if instead of the usual listicles directing you exactly where to go, you could use more of an 'areas to explore' where you guide travellers to the right area, whether it be a corner of a bustling city or a collection of streets on the outskirts of somewhere. So rather than pointing them to an exact location, you take them somewhere they can explore either great food options, local shops, fun things to do
  • @AJ Morris I love the local live chat idea - a digital vaccine for cultural faux pas' and a way for travellers to integrate themselves with the general 'ambience' before visiting. I always thought that one limitation of travel blogs was that they mostly only wrote about the tangible aspects of a place.

Also could you be referring to @windowswap?
I LOVED their concept and would honestly love for them to integrate VR and position it as a sort of therapy.
  • I’m just spitballing but your header drew me in! I really like the live chat with the local in that you can get their perspective, maybe with what it’s like when people visit their town or their area? Or... this might sound a bit ‘out there’ but maybe asking them what sort of vibe or energy they feel their area gives off, they’re not dictating how travellers should feel, but still a sense of what they might expect (maybe some what not to do’s if there’s a specific culture involved?) Also, your VR idea reminded me of this site I saw where people send in photos of the view from their window across the world, could do something like, ‘beyond the window’?
  • Two trends I've noticed popping up recently are recommendation machines for books, TV etc (you put in your preferences and the algorithm recommends stuff, and you say whether you like or don't like those recommendations to refine them further) and interactive/choose-your-own-adventure storytelling.

I think it would be cool to use a platform like Twine to create an interactive, 'rolling' itinerary that could match you up with places based on preferences and offer you choices about where to go (e.g. "this restaurant is closer to you and posher but more expensive"). That way it would always be easy to change plans for the day or try something new, and you could survey your entire trip's itinerary at a glance and make adjustments if you want.
