Trying to move my career in a new direction, that more closely aligns with my personal / creative pursuits. Advice / mentor welcome!

I have been feeling very out of place in my current area of work for a few years but it wasn't the right time for me to focus on a career change. However, it is now. It's hard to gauge, when you are not fully immersed in an industry, where one might fit in and what roles are within reach by drawing on transferable skills and not starting at the bottom again!

Suggestions given to me have included various roles at creative agencies eg account director / creative services roles and production. Production has really peaked my interest as the parts of my job I love and excel at are organisation, project management, delivery, stakeholder management and building and managing successful teams - and indeed I was encouraged to investigate this more by my tutor at UAL (during my fashion photography course) who noticed the flair I had for shoot planning and execution. A big problem I'm encountering is being pigeon holed due to the industries I've worked in. Indeed, people are often taken aback when they learn of my career as it is in quite stark contrast to my personality, personal pursuits and way I present myself to the world! However, I have worked for global and market leading brands my whole career and would emphasis that I believe that my time at these companies has given me a wealth of experience and confidence working in complex, demanding and fast paced environments.

Any advice or offers of mentoring would be most welcome!

  • @Vikki Ross your link was great Vicki and should be more than helpful to creative jobseekers. I make a light heated podcast specifically for those wanting a career in the film/entertainment industry which might be of help (if it's not any help at least it should make you laugh!)

  • Hi Jill,
I would be happy to assist also.... In fact I make a weekly podcast specifically for people like yourself.... in fact I had a producer on an earlier episode whose interview you may find helpful too:

  • Hey Jill,
Lots of detail here, but hopefully can give you some tips - the first step is to try and get a sharper understanding of what you want to do. You could do this either by trying to pick up extra work/alternate projects within your current company, starting some projects on your own, or by offering to support a different company eg. being a runner on some shoots. People will always pigeon hole you and it may take some time but with persistance you will get there, guarenteed. I think whats key is not being afraid to try things even if they feel a bit junior because they'll help you move forward. Hope that helps, Lex
