What are your opinions on apprenticeships, I have heard many times about them but I have been told it isnt worth it for people my age (25)

  • @Ana Castañeda I think it is possible to pay your own way on an Apprenticeship wage but only it you have low outgoings and/or the wage is really good. Unfortunately a lot of employers will try to only pay the minimum wage only, which for Apprentices is a lot lower than the NMW, which isn't great to start with. A few employers though, will value you to give you much better than that. I'd say definitely look at Apprenticeships as a job & training option but be selective with what you might apply for, especially look into the salary details too. There could be a gem in there that's just right for you & there's no harm in looking.
  • @Pamela Gulliver One question, I have heard it doesnt pay well enough and the reason why is more targeted to young people is because they live with their parents still. Do you think is duable to be independent and do an apprenticeship?
  • I agree that 25 is not too old, although you may not qualify for govt backed schemes. Don't let that stop you from approaching agencies directly. Personally I will always look favourably on someone who is a real go-getter, because that attitude will most likely spill into their work ethic.
  • Hi Ana,

First of all, I hope 25 isn't considered too old! :)

I actually think a good apprenticeship can be the most valuable step you take in your career. The people you learn from in active service situations will likely form the basis for which you approach tasks for the forseeable future. Not to mention the contacts you can make!

The effectiveness of an apprenticeship (like anything else) will rely on the opportunities afforded to you within your tenure. So I would suggest researching the company in depth and interrogating the opportunity for responsibilities to make sure its a good use of your time at such a critical stage of your career. Perhaps speaking to former apprentices would help?

If it feels like you are doing the coffee run more than you are learning new skills, it may not be the right move...

    Hope this helps!

    John
  • Hi Ana, I finished my Apprenticeship aged 24 & I think it really helped to set up my career & relevant skills. I think Apprenticeships are actually offered even to those in their late 30s, although most employers prefer people in their late teens/20s. You don't just get the role-specific training too but key skills & IT certificates too. I list them seperately on my CV cause they stand as small qualifications on their own. Personally, I think they're good things that help you professionally & considering the job market, are a serious option for those in their 20s. Hope this helps you somehow, Pam.
