What makes a good video editing portfolio?

I'm looking to apply for jobs and a lot of them ask for a portfolio. I've never done this before so I was wondering what's the best way to present my work? More content driven (what I've edited) or something more dynamic (set to music and fast-paced)?

  • Hi Hafeez, I imagine that job applications are looking for either a website that displays your work or else they want to see a showreel.

Do you have a website already? You can put one together for relatively cheap these days and then embed the video content you've worked on so that it's all collected in one place for people to see. I would highly recommend doing this in the near future if not now as it's basically a digital business card these days.

If you need to make a showreel then I would suggest you make a 1 minute edit cut to music with all the best bits of the work you've created. Top load it so that all the coolest, sickest, most banging stuff comes first, don't hold back the good stuff for the end. You want to dazzle people immediately so that they keep watching and don't drop off/click away before the good bits.

This final point is a bit cheeky but if you worked on something and don't have the exported video as a file to use in an edit, find it online and rip it from that platform. There are applications and websites that can do this for you so that you can make sure to have the best available assets for the edit.

    Good luck!
