Whats the best way to go about becoming a freelance marketer?

  • Hi Katherine

You’ll need to apply marketing learnings and experience into your own personal brand in order to stand out in a pretty full on market.

    Work with the 4 Ps

    What’s your product and proposition?
Where do you add or create value? Does your experience play into this? Are you specialist in startups, scale ups, growth, turnarounds? Create your brand around that and give it an emotional pull.
Also, do you bring products as a freelancer? Ie do you have İP or unique processes that you own and bring to each job vs taking the brief and doing work?

    Pricing
How are you charging? What’s your rate based on? Are you pricing for short or long term? Can you price based on value creation (ie really leveraging your product above and charging on the value it creates vs the day rate?)

Are you premium or budget? Never be in the middle - there are loads of people there, undifferentiated and commoditised.

    Place
Who will you work with and who won’t you? Why? Do you want to stay in a specific field or industry? Do you want to work internationally, remotely etc

    Promotion
What’s your go to market strategy? How will you promote yourself? To who and when? What’s the customer journey to buy you? How will you reinforce your positioning and through which channels?

These aren’t exhaustive and there’ll be loads of additional advice from others I’m sure.

Start as you mean to go on as, as a freelancer or ‘consultant’ how you represent your brand and what you do reflects hugely on the work people imagine you can do for them.

    Stay Boom!
  • I enrolled onto an online course in digital marketing accredited by CIM the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Have a look at CIMs website and see what training courses might be right for you. Having a recognisable marketing qualification is the first step.

I also suggest working part time in a marketing department to see what type of work you might like to do as a freelancer.
