I’m wanting to purchase a medium format film camera but don’t know which to go for. A lot are saying the Mamiya is good but which?

  • Personally I have a blad V500 that are legendary, I've had Mamiyas both 645 and RB 6x7, you need to watch lenses the leaves of the apature rings can have a tendancy to stick as they get older.

Both the RB and RZ 6x7 are monsters both have a great reputation, these days I'd still go with the RB 6x7 becasue the RZ is electronic and if it fails it is very hard to get the electronic components for a repair. With the RB you do have a fighting chance of keeping it alive.

The Pentax 6x7 is awesome, a friend runs 3 and thinks they are gods gift.

There are lots of alternatives such as twin lens reflexes.

What you must be very careful of is the film back you choose, make sure you get a 120 back - don't buy a 220 back you can't get the film.
  • Hey!!! I am having a Pentax 645N its an autofocus camera great image quality with the FA75 2.8 lens and you can find it quite cheap on ebay.
  • Hey Ana,

In range of a mamiya medium format cameras your choices are between rz67(professional industry standard, v heavy though), rb67(older version, a bit more friction to take a picture, but you probably will pay somewhere twice cheaper for the same picture quality), 645(lighter to carry around produces smaller negatives(inferior quality due to smaller negative size than rb and rz but you will get more pictures, I beilieve it’s somewhere around 15 or 16 shots vs 10 shot on rz and rb produce.

I would suggest to rent one of these on fat llama, this code can give you £20, so you can try out before you invest, hope this helps :)

And I would recommend to watch a couple of videos just to understand the pros and cons of each camera.
