Hear Jyll Bradley, the artist behind The Hop pavilion, discuss her artistic practice with the Hayward Gallery Director, Ralph Rugoff.

Jyll Bradley’s outdoor installation has been bringing joy to Southbank Centre visitors throughout this summer. Inspired by an overlooked piece of local history, The Hop creates a glowing, colourful, welcoming space for visitors to explore.
Jyll Bradley’s work first emerged in the late 1980s within a cohort of artists interested in combining the formal vigour of Minimalism with ideas of identity and place.
Light has been a constant protagonist in her practice, from her early photographic light-box installations to her work with fluorescent plexiglas. Her acclaimed public realm commissions reference generative structures such as hop gardens and glasshouses, expressing what she sees as the practical, spiritual and emotional work involved in growing a sense of self, place or community.
Bradley’s sculptures have increasingly become sites of activity. New music, poetry, film and dance pieces have been commissioned in response to The Hop. These innovations reflect Bradley’s interest in sculpture as a potent gathering place of people and ideas.
This event has been realised with the generous support of David Maclean.
