This two-hour webinar from the Decolonising Arts Institute is an introduction to current debates around contemporary art from the Global South and how decolonial approaches have impacted the field as a whole.

This webinar led by Dr. Ileana L. Selejan, Decolonising Arts Institute Research Fellow, presents a counterpoint to conventional narratives on contemporary art which inherit a strong Western bias. By inverting the map, it looks at how the contested category of the “global” can be explored exclusively through a South by South perspective.

In the first part of this session, participants will gain a more in-depth understanding of how Latin American art is positioned within the field, discursively as well as in terms of exhibition practices. We will consider asymmetries of power that are embedded within the art world, by looking at historic connections between the so-called “centres” and “peripheries”.

In the second part of the session, we will be discussing South by South connections, and gain insight into how artists working across Latin American, African and Asian contexts have historically contested the dominance of the West.

The webinar builds upon examples from Latin America primarily, although by relation to other regions from the Global South. Decolonial and post-colonial theory will inform in-class conversations, as we test how such approaches might counter Eurocentric cultural paradigms.

Who should attend this session?
This webinar is aimed at anyone interested in gaining a more in-depth understanding of contemporary art outside of a traditional Western-biased canon. It is also an excellent fit for individuals who are new to the creative sector or who aspire to work in it and want to learn more about global contemporary art from a decolonial perspective.
