'State of Independents' is a new series at the House of St Barnabas celebrating the impact of independent labels on the world of music.

Kicking of the series is 'Spaciousness: Music Without Horizons' showcasing Lo Recordings, a label that for over 25 years have been carefully curating music across the spectrum. Their output reaches across and beyond the electronic music world to include jazz, rock and avant-garde. Aphex Twin, Grimes, Susumu Yokota, Luke Vibert, David Toop, Fischerspooner, Blur, Ed Macfarlane, Thurston Moore and Squarepusher are amongst the long list of names that adorn their back catalogue.

Label owners Jon Tye and Gavin O’Shea have witnessed the ebb and flow of an art form in constant mutation. With over 200 releases on their label Lo Recordings together with award winning Norwegian/US based design team Non-Format tell an unfolding story of alternative music since the mid-90s.

For the St Barnabas Showcase, Lo Recordings will bring to life their compilations series called ‘Spaciousness’, a loosely based retake on ambient and neo classical under the banner of ‘Music Without Frontiers’, Lo will also be exclusively be exhibiting for The House of St Barnabas a selection of album covers, designed by award winning Non Format.

‘Spaciousness 2’ has been compiled by label founder Jon Tye and is the second volume in a series of compilations ‘that seek to explore the connections, the overlaps, the roots and the future of a music variously referred to as ambient, deep listening, new age, fourth world and post classical’.
