THE ROLE
Job Introduction
Transparency is an essential element in ensuring audiences feel they can trust the BBC's journalism. There has never been a more important time to ensure news consumers understand not just what we know, but how we know it – and BBC Verify is at the heart of this as we find new ways to share more of the important, thoughtful work that goes into verifying, fact checking and sourcing our journalism. The newly created unit brings together the BBC's best analysts, fact-checkers, data specialists and designers from across domestic and global teams with expertise in data journalism, disinformation and the latest Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and verification techniques.
BBC Verify is seeking a correspondent with extensive experience of open-source and data journalism, to work with the wider team to identify editorial opportunities to tell exciting stories using innovative and impactful formats. You will have a proven track record as a correspondent with experience of delivering on the day multi-platform journalism and a good understanding of the editorial ambitions of BBC Verify. You should have an eye for a great story that promotes innovative forensic storytelling and the ability to translate it into broadcast content for all platforms.
The role will report into the Verify management team led by the Executive Editor.
Main Responsibilities
As the BBC Verify correspondent you will need to deliver agenda-setting forensic journalism in a clear, distinctive and impactful way across multiple platforms.
You will ensure that the output meets BBC editorial policy standards and can sustain public, legal, political and media scrutiny and will work to support the BBC’s objective to grow the value we deliver to all audiences across the UK and globally.
You will work with the wider BBC Verify team to pioneer new innovative approaches to data journalism and analysis; as well as originate and deliver multi-platform content including original story ideas and material with editorial ambition.
Are you the right candidate?
You will have:
  • A creative approach to storytelling, with a proven track record of innovation in visual journalism on digital and broadcast platforms; including extensive experience of using open source material, graphics and visual techniques to produce industry-leading investigative reports.
  • The ability to lead BBC Verify’s journalism across digital, social media and the flagship programming on BBC News; the successful candidate will have an engaging style, considerable expertise in forensic journalism and a detailed understanding of how to tell complex stories in a clear and compelling way.
  • Extensive experience of forensic and data-driven journalism, with significant experience of using the latest techniques and technology in OSINT and UGC verification.
  • A proven track record as a correspondent with experience of delivering on-the-day impactful multi-platform journalism. This must include experience of reporting on breaking news as well as delivering high impact content for digital output, TV and radio.
  • An understanding of changing audience habits and the evolving media landscape, in relation to forensic and investigative journalism. You will be able to demonstrate new ways of storytelling using open source journalism.
  • A detailed understanding of impartiality as well as the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and the law in relation to journalism.
