THE ROLE
The role is within News Engineering, the team responsible for the suppliers and technology used to commercialise and distribute the BBC News channel to our affiliate customers and viewers across the globe.
To support the Business’ growth plans, we are looking for a Senior Broadcast Engineer to help us deliver major projects across Scheduling, Languaging, Content Supply, Centralised & Edge/Cloud Playout, Encoding and Satellite & IP/AWS Distribution.
The role will report to the Principal Technical Architect and work closely with the Engineering team, liaising with key Sales, Business and Projects leads, and work directly with Suppliers and Customers. Working in a fast-paced environment, and around and on live broadcast services, accuracy and attention to detail is paramount.
The role will also include:
  • Developing and expanding existing solutions to deliver new business requirements.
  • Working with the business to capture requirements and provide indicative costs & designs, to drive commercial opportunities forward.
  • Working iteratively to develop designs and work collaboratively to deliver the new services - supporting the expansion of our linear broadcast streams.
  • This may range from launching a new customer or channel on an existing platform; delivering a change of technology or supplier system within a platform; through to the replacement of a legacy multi-customer platform.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
Key Criteria
  • Strong background in broadcast engineering or technical operations within a commercial environment
  • Experience leading the requirements gathering, design, and delivery of technical systems and services
  • Experience changing or delivering a solution across multiple suppliers
  • Experience of AWS Cloud, Edge Playout and IP-based linear distribution
  • Experience of linear playout, and/or encoding and distribution, preferably tier 1 and live channels
  • Experience gathering customer requirements and communicating complex technical systems
  • Ability to structure and plan changes and wider projects with in-house and external teams
  • Experience leading the delivery of projects into BAU operation and support
  • Knowledge of IP networking and InfoSec fundamentals for broadcast environments
  • Ability to document and draw technical solutions, diagrams and test scripts
Desirable
  • Knowledge of Codecs, DAI, SCTE104/35 and ad-insertion
  • Knowledge of Subtitle and Audio Languaging processes
  • Knowledge of broadcast file formats and file delivery systems

PACKAGE DESCRIPTION
The role will occasionally require out of hours cover. Job Reference: 17628 Band: D  Salary: up to 56,233 plus London Weighting Allowance depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
