Job Introduction
The BBC is making the shift from being a broadcaster that speaks to our audiences to being a service that is shaped by them and designed around their wants and needs whilst stimulating and delighting audiences around the world. To achieve this mission of being a Digital First BBC, we are building a data organisation which will lead cultural and organisational change. This includes transitioning the BBC to a data product organisation, evolving our data architecture, and embedding data capabilities company wide.
The Data Operations team is a newly established capability with a comprehensive, Pan-BBC mandate. Their mission is to foster an agile mindset, implement effective ways of working, and drive operational excellence in data across the BBC. This critical role supports the execution of the BBC’s data strategy with a focus on innovation, integrity, and excellence.
Interview Process
Interview process: At the BBC we value everyone’s time and to that effect we don’t run long or convoluted interview processes.
The process will contain two steps: 1) A 30 Minute introductory call with the Head of Data Operations focused on BBC values and your fit for the role and the culture. 2) A 90 Minute Panel Interview comprising of a pre-set case study applicable to the role, and a competency-based assessment.
Main Responsibilities
As a Senior Technical Project Manager formerly known as a Senior Data Operations Manager, you will be an Expert Individual Contributor reporting into our Head of Data Operations. You will be an expert on delivering and scaling complex Data initiatives across large organisations, often working across departmental boundaries and collaborating with stakeholders at all levels of the business. You will be accountable for the planning, delivery and overall day-to-day coordination and management of a portfolio of workstreams that underpins our Pan-BBC Data Strategy.
Responsibilities are not solely however on delivery of projects, but also to drive adoption of Agile techniques with Data Product Teams and a continuous improvement mindset across Data teams, coaching teams to be not only self-sufficient but self-optimising.
  • Lead various initiatives across the Data Strategy portfolio, managing the end-to-end delivery process from project initiation to successful completion and transition to BAU support within the Data Value chain.
  • Lead Service and Operational excellence (Data Service Support) including Incident, Problem Management, Feature requests and maintenance of our Service portfolio. 
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, promoting transparency, collaboration, and innovation in outcome delivery.
  • Lead change management programs to ensure smooth transitions and adoption of new processes, programs and products. 
  • Identify and manage project risks, dependencies, and impediments, implementing mitigation strategies to drive successful strategic outcomes.
  • Ensure stakeholder commitments are met, documenting and communicating any changes to expectations.
  • Champion agile best practices, providing coaching and mentorship to teams and individuals, and facilitating the development of agile competencies.
  • Collaborate closely with key stakeholders, including senior management, product managers, and development teams, to align on project priorities and timelines.
  • Work closely with finance, procurement, vendors, and data stakeholders to forecast, manage, and control internal and external expenditure within the department, ensuring strategic and commercial alignment.
  • Facilitate cross-functional collaboration and effective communication among team members, stakeholders, and senior management.

You would have experience in:
  • Previously worked in an IT Service support environment including service strategy, Incident Management and Continuous Improvement.
  • Previously worked in a Data environment or understand the key concepts Data Product or Programme Management. 
  • Deep working knowledge of Agile methodologies and their implementation across various models and organizations.
  • Proven track record of leading, delivering, and scaling data initiatives within large-scale organizations.
  • Expertise in creating leadership-level communications that provide clarity and understanding on complex topics.
  • Experience in navigating procurement processes and managing vendor performance effectively.
  • Proficient in creating and maintaining program and/or project plans with robust risk management strategies.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching teams on data delivery practices across the BBC.
  • Strong background in change management and leading multiple complex cross-functional teams in industry or consulting environments.
  • Capable of leading delivery for multiple teams, using metrics and reporting to drive change.
  • Successful track record of making significant improvements to an organization’s ways of working, leading to noticeable enhancements in success metrics.
  • Experience in managing the scoping and sizing of large, complex work pipelines.
  • Demonstrable experience in a technical, systems, or backend delivery environment.
Beneficial would be:
  • Previously worked in a Data environment or understand the key concepts of either: Data Mesh, Metadata, Data Governance, Data Analytics, Data Fluency, Data Engineering, Data Architecture or Data Operations.
  • Previously Implemented a Service Strategy across a large organisation including Service Catalogue, Service Level Agreement (SLAs) and continuous improvement programmes.
