About Us

We are a world-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre. We use the Museum's unique collections and our unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.

Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.

We employ 900 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.

Diversity and inclusion matter to us.

Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.

We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the museum feels valued, respected and supported to thrive.

About the Role

Do you want to help the one of the UK's most popular museums create advocates for the planet through social media?

We’re in the early stages of developing a new team that will help engage and delight our 4+ million-strong social media community, encouraging a deeper relationship both with the natural world and with us as an organisation, our mission and products.

We’re looking for a new Social Media Executive who will bring our story and personality to life for social media audiences across a range of channels including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter – and whatever comes next!  We're also looking for someone who is excited about the chance to influence and improve the way we work as a team and with the wider organisation.

As our new Social Media Executive, you’ll spend your days create exciting digital content, including shortform video, graphic assets and witty social media copy. You’ll respond to briefs from across the organisation as well as coming up with your own unique ideas to engage our audiences.

You’ll help moderate social media channels, engage in social listening and help colleagues across the organisation understand and improve the impact of our social media posts. You’ll help make sure our social media calendar is full of varied, interesting content that gives us the best chance of meeting our ambitious targets for social media engagements and views. You’ll be a champion for accessibility, two-way engagement and creative risk-taking.

Reporting to the Social Media Manager, the Social Media Executive will sit within the wider Digital Content team under the Communications, Digital, Marketing and Publishing (CDMP) department. We’re a friendly, creative team that supports flexible working. You will need to be able to regularly work on-site, to create content and take part in in-person collaboration, but you’ll also have the opportunity for regular working from home if you want. We want to be as inclusive and equitable as we can in our hiring so we’re up for discussing specific adjustments and access needs to help make this role work for you.

Whether it’s creating content to inspire visits to our latest exhibition, sharing stories about our impactful scientific research, jumping on the latest trends in pop culture or helping mitigate and manage risks to our reputation – every day is different at the Natural History Museum and there’s a huge variety of things to do. So, if you’re looking for a varied, creative digital role with the chance to make a real impact for both people and planet, we’d love to hear from you!

About you

  • Ability to moderate social media channels, including an awareness of tone of voice, safeguarding and desire to provide excellent customer service.
