About

Ten years ago, after falling into disrepair, The Old Library was closed. Library services moved to new premises, but we lost a building that embodied what a community can do when it works together. In 2016, a group of local residents approached Bexley Council with an idea to rebuild the Old Library. They set up The Exchange, a not-for-profit charitable organisation, with the aim of re-establishing the building at the centre of community life. The Exchange partially re-opened The Old Library in February 2019 after a first phase of building works. This work provided a new roof, rescued the building from potential ruin, and brought the lower ground floor back into use as a flourishing new café, bar and restaurant – The Bookstore. Upstairs, The Exchange delivered a diverse pop-up programme including markets, performances, concerts, exhibitions, festivals and workshops; and is now delivering a second-phase of building works that will bring the entire building back into use for the community. The Exchange is a community organisation, which means we want everyone to be involved! If you are interested in helping shape the future of The Exchange - and Erith, we would like to hear from you.
