Editing // SUITCASE Vol. 26, The Nostalgia Issue

For the onset of spring I wanted to recognise the ways in which the concept of nostalgia is both celebrated and distorted in pop culture and politics, and how this trend might filter through to travel. As I wrote in my Editor's Letter, what unites both approaches is "the impulse to escape, to locate our future in another time and place. Yes, nostalgia can trap us in an imaginary utopia that may quickly turn dystopian – but it can also inspire, teach and give us an anchor both to where we came from and where we hope to go." As Print Editor-in-Chief I single-handedly conceptualised, commissioned and edited all content, as well as collaborating with travel partners to produce trips, managing the budget and production timelines, and working with the design, digital and advertising teams on production, promotion and commercial strategy. The issue was one of our best-selling to date. Highlights included: - A love letter to train travel inspired by 80 journeys across the globe - My story with photographer Jacob Elwood on the complicated, post-colonial ethics of safari in Botswana - An essay charting the evolution of travel advertising and the allure of vintage posters - Expansive, epic journeys by car and camel through the silver-screen dreams of California and the sands of Jordan's Wadi Rum desert - A Golden Age glamour-infused photo diary in Bermuda by photographer Gray Malin - Featured influencer spots with Jo Malone, Emilia Wickstead and Garance Doré - Illustrated snippets of gossip across the ages from London's grande-dame hotels
