If we were make a Venn diagram of man and his psychological relationship with nature, the area that the two share, "the union" could be seen to form that basis of this film. MACHINES is a series of short cinematic movements focused on this overlap between man and the elemental environment, the point where man connects physically and spiritually with nature and puts part of himself within the essential material. It is this act which is the legacy of our ancient past, the pre-technological junction where we still had memory of our place within the natural order yet were far enough removed to try and reason with this knowledge. MACHINES is the legacy of my film MATERIALS; a study of the underlying forces of nature presented as distinct characters…Whereas MATERIALS is the picture of the elements characterised as alien to our being, MACHINES is the code, the dialogue by which we attempt to speak to them.
