Part of ABS Broadcast, abs.tv is one of the largest privately owned broadcast services facility in Europe and a Sky authorised provider of playout and EPG Services. Advanced Production Services (APS) provided studio and post-production services for ABS clients. Role included daily management of staff – motion graphics, studio production & editing team, account management, upkeep of studio facilities (scheduling, tech support, bookings and invoicing) as well as providing creative direction & strategy on all video & animation projects. We produced a whole range of video animation projects for the BBC, various Soho based ad agencies as well as numerous product advertisements appearing on TV shopping channels. On a daily basis I provided TV direction as well as live vision mixing for PTV Prime daily news programme 'World Today' reaching an audience of over 50 million throughout Asia & Europe.

Designed the inaugural Major Donors Program brochure, printed in every language and used throughout the world in promoting AI. A digital campaign supported the Program as well as a variety of leaflets, an animation and event marketing collateral. I collaborated with Magnum Photos in choosing the photographs for the brochure.

Client briefing – understanding client objectives from initial conversation right through to final deliverable on a huge variety of projects. Quoting & accounting – produced quotations incorporating design, photography, filming, advertising, material and printing costs followed by delivery note, final invoice & payment demand. Designed, produced & delivered a wide scope of work catering to the APAC market – from ad campaigns to the manufacturer of shot glasses. Staff management – hired & briefed Asian designers, photographers, illustrators, artists, film makers, printers & manufacturers.
I was employed before the official launch of this third English-language daily to solve the problems with printing colour & b/w imagery & graphics on newsprint. The entire pre-press system had to be recalibrated to establish accurate WYSIWYG processes, from the initial scan of a photograph, all the way to the Heidelberg printing presses. This paved the way for better use and display of imagery & graphics within the newspaper. We were able to print imagery at larger sizes in comparison to the competition, introducing full column width imagery into the layout of the newspaper, which hadn't been done before. We changed the face of Hong Kong newspaper design at the time, by using full-width imagery in the layout. The Eastern Express newspaper became the most recognised newspaper in Hong Kong for its style of photography (excellent team of photographers), choice of photographs and colour, b/w reproduction & printing. After a successful launch, I became 'Head of Digital Imaging', managing staff, schedules & workload. I participated daily in editorial meetings to discuss the pairing of images with stories as well as liaised with the backbench regarding the overall design of the newspaper. Responsible for sourcing suitable photographs from the wires to support international stories – pulling from Reuters, AFP, AP, PressLink systems. Designed illustrations, graphics and photo montages to support editorial content in the newspaper and supplements. Trained all members of the photographic department (including the Picture Editor) on how to use a Mac to be able to carry out complex colour correcting, advanced image manipulation and archiving. In return, I gained extensive knowledge of photography/darkroom printing from my peers & became a staff photographer, shooting assignments for the newspaper in areas of News, Business, Features and Sports.
Managed the day-to-day running of the digital retouching department of – at the time – London's largest & leading UK pre-press, reprographics & data management company. Work involved briefing and scheduling of staff, weekly meeting with executive management, overseeing the scanning, image management, archiving, complex page composition, retouching and output of final artwork to the strictest of deadlines. All image manipulation, colour correction, sophisticated retouching of photographs, special layering effects, complex masking and the creation/archiving of layouts were performed on the Scitex Prisma & Assembler workstations. Composed, colour corrected, manipulated and output 100s of publications on a weekly, fortnightly, monthly basis including all of their front covers. Worked on the majority of IPC / EMAP publications: Q Mag, EMPIRE, Guardian weekend supplements, AutoExpress, AutoSport, BIG, Business Life, CQ, fhm, Smash Hits, More magazine, My Guy, Signature to name a few.
Rapida Graphics was a cross-media production company specialising in image retouching, professional photo editing, DTP, compositing & reprographics. Worked on BP annual reports & advertisements; Camel Cigarettes advertisements; Decca record & CD packaging; Private sector annual reports; IAMS pet food ads and packaging; Rothmans billboard designs; The Mirror Group advertisements; Thomsons travel brochures; Together Fashion yearly catalogues; TOMY Toys packaging and YOU magazine front covers. Trained in all aspects of image retouching, complex masking to perform colour corrections, scanning & CMYK & Spot colour printing processes, sophisticated image and page composition. I specialised in the manipulation, retouching and colour correction of graphics, photography and artwork used in advertising campaigns for national newspapers, publications for multinational corporations, mail order catalogues and product packaging. Learnt all aspects of the Scitex pre-press workflow system, laser imaging equipment, desktop scanners, digital colour and soft proofing devices. I learnt how to manipulate every aspect of an image from changing the skin tones and bust size of a model to retouching out rubbish from a scene to appear on an annual report. I created complex layering in order to colour correct certain areas of a photograph. I was responsible for assembling each individual component of an advertisement, publication, signage or packaging into artwork. Each individual component of the advertisement would then be manipulated, colour corrected and exported ready for the printing press. Often, artwork required complex pre-press colourwork which included the output of over 20 colours for printing. Organised schedules for daily briefing, scanning, design, composition and output. Fully trained in the skills of the darkroom developing & printing – both black & white and Colour.
Modern Text was a respected typography firm run by the Miles' family, responsible for creating book & magazine layouts, adverts, food labelling, packaging & artwork for multinational publishing companies. Clients included: Dorling Kindersley, Penguin Books, Sothebys, IPC Media, Tesco Group & Chrysalis Books. Part of a highly-creative team I was taught the principles of beautiful typography & composition based on Bauhaus & Gestalt theories, which were underpinned by a meticulous attention to detail. A solid understanding of how to 'form' communication effectively was cultivated very early on in my career. I learnt the art, trade, & business of typography, orthography, text markup language (how to code), phototypesetting, graphic design, grid systems, colour theory, photography, pen work, publishing, keyboarding & proofreading. I was also responsible for training new staff. The stylisation of text we find easy to format today was more complex back then. It required complex coding using text markup languages to describe type and other page formatting information. The descendants of these languages include SGML, XML, and HTML (commonly used in web design today). By hand, I typeset & art worked layouts for a magnitude of companies, notably: – Sotheby's World Guide to Antiques & Their Prices – Dorling Kindersley The Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia & The Way Things Work – 'Classic Cars' (Britain's longest-established magazine) I remember fondly the excitement generated on receiving my first salary – cash placed in a sealed printed wage pocket with air holes!

Activities and Societies: Involved in the filming & production of the world première 'Going Into Shadows', an opera in three acts by Andrew Schultz @ The Guildhall School of Music & Drama. 29 May to 13 June 2001. We filmed pre-recorded material for the production of the opera, and filmed the production in performance as an OB (outside broadcast) project. I was part of the opera acting as the cameraman, filming the action live on stage with the output projected onto the screen stage in real time. An amazing experience. The National Film and Television School is one of the top film, television and new media schools in the world as evidenced by the Observer Newspaper describing the NFTS as the 'The Best Film School in the World'.
