About me
Alice is a print and surface textile designer specilising in hand and digital print, and light surface manipulation for interiors. Colour and abstract pattern exploration is a fundamental part of her design process, and her collections stem from her love of photography and her passion for innovative surfaces.
She translates elements of traditional textile craft through different hand processes such as screen printing, discharge printing and hand dyeing fabric. Alice uses a multi-disciplines approach to creating innovative designs by involving modern techniques that compliments and push the boundaries of traditional textiles.
Key inspirations come from organic structures and textual found objects which communicate surface qualities and layers of depth to be explored through print. This is reflected through expressive paintings and different levels of subtle details from laser etching to CAD machine embroidery. Carefully blending organic forms with contemporary methods, which provides her work with a unique and graphic style.
Projects
- WEATHERED FLORALS & IMPERFECTIONSTaking an unconventional source of inspiration from perfect imperfections within nature and weathered florals found among foliage. Alice was inspired by the intricate patterns in nature, tracing raw texture, flawed surfaces and shapes found in the surroundings of eco-systems. The subject matter persists of fallen foliage, coarse florals and various textures, which fed directly into the print and surface manipulation explored within her sampling. Alice’s working method is influenced by processes to create a sophisticated mixture of subtle and graphic variety of interior prints for the high end market. Focusing on screen-printing and laser etching surfaces combined with digital design. With light CAD embroidery to build surface interest and create a subtle surface manipulation. Alice has explored the contrast between contemporary textile processes with traditional and craft techniques for a soft and sophisticated collection of designs. Displaying a mixture of hard and soft materials, ranging from delicate silk to metal tiles, hand painted tactile qualities are compared, contrasted and illustrated through print. These elements highlight the lost beauty found in decayed objects and rural foliage bringing contrast to the usual organic matter.
- GEOLOGY & SEA FORMATIONS Taking unusual inspiration from the subject matter of geology and sea formations, alongside the concept of abstract design and modern marbling based upon a theme for high-end interior market Autumn/Winter. Alice was influenced by weathered rock structures, tracing intricate patterns in nature and drawing organic textures caused by the formation of waves into mirrored repeats. The project consisted of traditional textile craft combined with contemporary textile processes, ranging from screen-printing to digital design and laser etching surfaces. Alice explored patterned distressed textures, translating lost formations into print designs. Neutral colour tones are the focal point, inspired by the sea and geology photography, brought to life with matte textures and reflective qualities through luminous metallic textures and tonal ombre values – similar to crashing waves and clear ocean.
