About me
Alice Riley is a confident, evolving designer who comes from a textiles background. Since discovering her love for texture, her passion and flare for creative fabrics is continuously advancing. She started her journey by creating tactile surfaces through multimedia and, loving fabric construction, pursued a degree in Fashion Knitwear and Knitted Textiles. After a year of designing for two commercial brands in New York, Alice has developed skills in designing creative pieces in an industrial environment, both for high street and ready to wear brands. ‘Urban Jungle’ is an innovative menswear collection for Autumn Winter 2020, driven primarily by New York’s architecture. The overall layers within the city which describe the “condense chaos” aesthetic, inspired by geometric patterns and layering within the city. She utilises unconventional industrial materials to define the conflict between material qualities found within architecture. Additionally, the juxtaposition of materials illuminates the range of 3D and 2D aspects to her designs as she combines structural silhouettes. Alice’s aims for her collection were to demonstrate knitwear in a structural and fluid aesthetic, playing on both structure through drape to create strong impactful silhouettes. Furthermore, responding to the urban environment in an innovative and sustainable way through upcycling industrial materials such as rubber and plastic cording depicts the matt, shiny and waterproof surface qualities within the concept. Additionally, she contrasts the overall surface quality of the industrial materials to selected knit structures. Overall responding and highlighting the many layer of shapes, marks and weights discovered within architectural infrastructure, empathising the overall condense chaos the urban environment holds. Alice loves the fast pace chaos of the design industry and would love to go back to a knitwear design team of a ready to wear brand, or possibly study for an MA, specialising in menswear.
