About me
Cara Budd has been influenced through research surrounded on how images are described as glimpses of reality (Chayowski, 2016). With this description of how images only show parts of reality it ignited a concept in which she investigates parts of images through print and drawings. In regards to the original images she takes a selection of urban and architectural images from London and Birmingham, edited to greyscale with blue aspects. The images contain places that she visits often. Yet the outcome on the images within this jewellery collection becomes distorted in reflection of the investigation into how photography only captures parts of authenticity. The distorted and linear nature of the images creates depth in which you want to discover more of the image. This plays with previous work in which Cara has used false memories and manipulation of memories to create pieces with distorted images. Cara uses stainless steel as the focal component of her work, which goes onto reflect the overall urban feel. The stainless steel is laser welded together, then powder coated in order to add a matt coloured finish. The images are sublimated onto stainless steel sheet and heat treated to prevent fading. With the original images reflecting a minimalist urban feel, industrial greys primarily habituate the work as a focal colour scheme, however these are complimented by varying shades of blue. This work is boldly matt, assisted with monotonal frames and the printed sublimation which provide stark colours and different tones within. The sublimated metal and the structures compliment each other; images are chosen with response to the overall aesthetic of each individual piece. This collection contains a mixture of brooches, necklaces, rings and bangles with inspiration leading from the large scale neckpiece. The pieces are varying in size and structural thicknesses. The large scale piece builds from a previous collection, yet still creates a new and exciting playful piece. The structural square themes flow throughout smaller and larger pieces. Tubing within the pieces create depth due to the thicker nature than wire, and with the tubes also including many of the attachments. This collections aims to provoke reactions to the prints and structural forms created in order to show the viewer that images are only parts of what we see. Much more is to understand and remember the feelings of the surroundings.
