  • NPR iTunes Redesign
NPR iTunes RedesignThe low-down: I explored a new design approach to NPR's iTunes homepage and implemented UX upgrades. One of the first tasks assigned to me at NPR was to give the organization’s iTunes homepage a visual upgrade. The design hadn’t been changed in a few years and featured a small version of the logo against a stark white background. Additionally, the categories of podcasts listed were outdated and didn’t reflect NPR’s current podcast offerings. I started off by familiarizing myself with the existing NPR design language. The better idea I got of how the company represented itself on digital platforms, the better I could complete the project. Once I had that foundation, using Sketch, I designed two basic mockups, one light and one dark, both both optimized for desktop, tablet, and phone. To break up the stark white background, I abstracted the logo’s colors into a frosted glass state which blended into a very light grey that makes up most of the page. To give the whole page more weight, I increased the size of the logo.
  • NPR Reddit AMA Cards
NPR Reddit AMA CardsThe low-down: I designed a standard card for social media use to consistently advertise NPR journalists' AMAs on Reddit. Journalists at NPR often particpate in AMAs on Reddit. These present valuable opportunities to connect NPR directly to the reader and to build a sustainable connection with the audience. Previously, no method existed to properly and consistently advertise these AMAs via NPR's social media accounts. I was tasked by the Social Media team to create a card for this purpose. Using Sketch, I mocked up various layouts for different name lengths and options for journalists who did not have headshots. For example, if we had a headshot-less journalist who’s beat was legal affairs, we would include a relevant image of the Supreme Court in the background. After the cards were developed, I created a Photoshop template of the card to replace name, photo, time, and date information, as well as documentation to assist those through the process who are not familar with Photoshop. This documentation also included art guidelines to help the Social Media team select and use the appropriate types of images. This card was approved by both the Design and Marketing teams with NPR and is currently in use.
