- TRACING THE LIGHT AND THE WEARThis project is a research into the sensory aspects of the architectural experience, ‘a way of looking at things’, things that form the environment’s atmosphere. By analysing and rediscovering the ‘genius loci’ of a significant historic building in Thessaloniki, (the Modiano Market), we intent to understand the place and its phenomena, in order to suggest a form of inhabitation. During the investigation, we use creative and experimental methods and processes, such as diagrams and model making, in order to codify the inherent spatial qualities of the site. Those manipulations lead to the formation of an original ‘mechanism’ that traces the light and the wear. The final intervention answers to the performance of context and the attachment to place through a resolved building project – an inventive, experimental and innovative architectural proposition. Therefore, the main goal is to reconstruct the various atmospheres of light and materiality. This is feasible through the interaction of the artificial mechanism mentioned above with the diagrams of light and wear. As a result, four spaces are designed that address spaces of contrasting intensities. These spaces amplify the existing conditions of light and materiality and highlight three specific periods of daytime. - Archaelogical Thematic Museum (Athens)ONCE_NOW’ from rocky earth to oversight of the whole Archaeological Thematic Museum of Piraeus Open Architectural Competition (Preliminary Design), 2014 The new Museum is a simple geometric volume with a three-way division. A ‘quarrying product’ that brings to mind the geomorphologic changes in the peninsula’s topography. A concrete block marks the base of the building’s volume while a porous prism, a stone’s volume after its cutting, demarcates its crest. The external structure, an element of optical penetration, surrounds the external motion flow while in the internal articulation a ‘funnel of light’ surrounds the central course of ascent, descent. The living experience of the whole, of ‘once now’, reaches its peak with the viewing of the city of Piraeus and Athens in a reflection game with water mirrors of the outdoor glyptotheque. The Museum square and the Public Park advance as a perceivably seamless and consistent space with legibility and size. Curves, fluid forms, create levels and access ramps, create an atmosphere of familiarity and optical diffusion, shaping the square.
- CutCuutur Laser Cut ApparelCUTCUUTUR laser cut apparel is a start-up brand created by a team of young architects and designers in Greece. It is established as a fashion brand, which promotes digital fabrication methods, like laser cut, implemented in clothing and accessory design. The main goal is to apply digital design methods to digital fabrication techniques, through a three phase workflow - 2D or 3D modeling - textile and material adjustment and fabrication (laser cutting, 3D printing). Inspired by geometric patterns and variable motifs, we designed expressive clothes and accessories that deviate from the ordinary, yet adjusted to casual clothing patrons and textiles. The challenge of each laser-cut pattern is to use and promote the physicality of different fabrics by creating not only fillings and holes but also layers and schusses. Therefore, the object escapes from the 2D dimensional perspective evolving to a piece of clothing that could be perceived as 3D entity. The combination of light and body movement gives ‘life’ to the fabric, by constantly differentiating the pattern.
