  • Anthomania
AnthomaniaA project about an obsession with flowers. The floral theme as been a continuous trend within the fashion industry and hugely popular within our history where men and woman assigned a significance to different flowers. This can be found within Egyptian inscriptions, Chinese writings and in Greek and Roman Mythology. The Victorian era also used flowers. This was convey their feelings to one another as this was frowned upon. Every flower has a meaning or symbol which helped them understand what the sender's feelings were towards them. The chrysanthemum for example has the symbolism of joy and the Gladiolus, strength of character. There are many other meanings such as love, friendship and perseverance. Such flowers and their meanings can be found within a floral dictionary written by a Victorian Lady named Miss Corruthers of Inverness. Gladiolus- strength of character Daisy - Purity and Innocence Lisianthus - Grace and Refinement Sweet Pea - Shyness Orange Roses - Desire Hydrangea - Perseverance
  • Religious Pearls
Religious PearlsDifferent religions have different myths or theories relating to pearls. Christianity: The gates of heaven were made out of pearls (pattern imitating a gate). When Adam & Eve were bannished from the heavens Eve cried white pearls and Adam cried black (men cry less hence why black pearls are more rare). Taoism: "The Flaming Pearl". Dragons are depicted as chasing a pearl like object. The pearl maybe thought of as a metaphor for perfection and enlightenment. There are traces that the flaming pearl is yang energy in taoism which what the comma within the pearl represents. Yin and Yang - are two halves, together they are complete. Yin and Yang are the starting point of change. When something is whole by definition it is unchanging and complete. When in two halves yin.yang, it upsets the equilibrium of the holiness. This starts both halves chasing after each other as they seek a new balance with each other. Yin is that shady side, yang the sunny side. Yin and yang are found in everyday things. fire and water. FEMALE (YIN) MALE (YANG) Islam: Pearls are beautiful manifestations of Allah's design and creation are born and found in the depth of the ocean within the protection of an oyster. All beautiful things are hidden, the pomegranite seeds in their peel, coconut in their course shell, diamonds in a mine? And the most beautiful, Allah chose this honour for a woman in order to preserve, protect and purify her beauty and to make it eternal paradise. A great honour bestowed on a woman is a symbol of dignity. Does keeping a pearl within a cover or a diamond in a safe place decrease its worth? Rather increases it. It is when women's outer appearance is hidden from the public display that her inner qualities of intellect, wisdom and knowledge shine through. The gem itself has become a symbol of perfection. The gem itself is the woman. Judaism: The high value attached to pearls by the ancient Hebrews is ilustrated by a beautiful Rabbinical Story in which only one object in nature is ranked above them. On approaching Egypt, Abraham hid Sarah in a chest, that foreign eyes might not behold her beauty. When he reached the place paying custom dues, the collectors said, "Pay us the custom"; and he replied "I will pay you your custom". They said, "Thou carrying clothes" he stated, "I will pay for clothes". Then they said to him, "Thou carriest gold"; and he answered "I will pay for gold". On this they said to him,"surely thou nearest the finest silk"; and he replied, "I will pay custom for the finest silk". Then they said "truly it must be pearls that thou tamest with thee," and he answered, "I will pay for pearls". Seeing that they could name nothing of value for which the patriarch was not willing to pay custom, they said. "It cannot be but that thou open the box and let us see what is within." So the chest was opened, and the land was illuminated by the ouster of Sarah's beauty. Buddhism: the Jewel in the Lotus. The Jewel that grants all desires. With chanting "......" and becoming enlightened is when you posses the jewel. If you practice the visualisation and mantra in this way you, yourself become the jewel and your environment becomes your lotus. Sarira are relics of buddhists. They are pearl like chunks of stone. These strange beads are seen as final distillations of a buddhists life well-lived, a physical manifestation of piety and devotion. Sarira are said to grow from bodies from living people usually at the culmination of a religious experience. Sarira has been said to grow from a Tibetan yogi named chosany Dorji Rinopche hair (2,000 pearl shaped sarira) Sarira are Buddhist relics. They are held to emote or incite "blessings" and 'grace' within the midstream and experience of those contacted to them.
  • The Modern Romantic Victorian
The Modern Romantic VictorianVictorian style clothing has recently been in style so why not take this opportunity to do a really "Twee" styled shoot. Every girls dream. Its not all based on looks! In the 19th Century women were confined to the house and gardens unless accompanied by a male. Women were to act and speak in specific ways. An era where women were politically invisible and were only recoginsed or made visible through their fashion sense. Fashion either recognised as Romantic (when Queen Victoria was in reign) and Gothic (when Queen Victoria Died). An era which Society was white driven and slavery was common. In the 20th Century women are now seen as political equals. They can walk, talk and act how they want as well as carry out jobs at the same level as men. A country that is now diverse with no slavery and all races are seen as equal. This fashion project of the Modern Romantic Victorian. Including elements of the Romantic Victorian fashion including pearls, ruffles, velvet and many other aspect to 20th Century fashion, denim, trousers and the use of showing skin. The model chosen is of a different ethnicity than white, posed with more free and natural movements in which a modern woman might, however still confined to a stunning 19th Century House, Somerley House.
