About me
Lila Bernstein-Newman is an interdisciplinary practitioner working with projects and briefs that span from film and graphics to research and objects. As a disabled designer, she often draws from her lived experience of Type 1 Diabetes by using data and actions generated by medical technology in her work. Interested in research-led projects, Lila’s personal practice and freelance roles have seen her collaborate with specialists (The Natural History Museum, The Francis Crick Institute) and make use of archival material (The National Archives, Dana Research Centre, The British Library). Recent graduate from Goldsmiths, University of London with First Class Honours in BA(design).

  • Redesigning Book Covers
Redesigning Book CoversA personal project, redesigning the covers of books I’ve read. These are conceptual only.
  • App for Microscopes and Manipulation
App for Microscopes and ManipulationTo develop my project, Microscopes and Manipulation, I’ve begun considering how to create an app that would be a digital version of my previous workshops. In these workshops I’d proposed questions to the participants such as “Is there a ‘true’ image of an object?” And “Does colouring a microscope image add information?”. The workshops focused on facilitating discussion about manipulations, truths and discovery in scientific imagery and exploring practical, creative ways, such as directly editing
  • Singles Artwork - Sam Bernstein
Singles Artwork - Sam BernsteinArtwork created for the artist, Sam Bernstein. For the first single, Primavera, the brief was to create a colourful and abstract graphic that was reminiscent of Spring. This design was then modified into the artwork for Made in Liverpool. These square designs were designed to work on streaming platforms such as Spotify.
  • Microscopes and Manipulation
Microscopes and ManipulationA research-led project that aims to contextualise scientific images (focusing on the micrographs created by electron microscopes) as
the products of manipulation from the various processes, people and technology used to create them. A scanning electron microscope or S.E.M uses electrons to create extremely magnified images, called micrographs. To build trust with science, the imaging process should not be distant from the non-specialist. The word “manipulation” has connotations of twisting the
  • Knitting Glucose
Knitting GlucoseDevising systems to encode my personal diabetes data into knitted garments and accessories. I enjoy physicalising data and translating it into something tangible. High blood sugar, low blood sugar, rapidly rising blood sugar etc all make my body feel a certain way. From anxious and shaky to tired, sad and sluggish. I often use landmark days, such as the relaxing of lockdown in the UK or a particularly bad day for me as points to immortalise in textiles. Within the data encoded into the knitted p

I designed and illustrated (using Adobe Photoshop) 82 character designs for the company to use in explaining their services. Each character had to be a visual representation of a number of moods, behaviours and actions. The designs were drawn to the client's specifications - a quirky style that they could easily replicate and draw themselves. I began with early preliminary sketches, then three developed characters and then the final style was agreed upon.
