About me
I am graduating from Manchester School of Art after specialising in woven textiles for the past 3 years on the Textiles in Practice course. My practice is often derived from my fascination of nature in rural landscapes. A lot of my inspiration is drawn from my local surroundings, I have an appreciation for local products and materials. Sustainability is also at the forefront of my practice, choosing GOTS certified products where possible and using natural dyes are just two of the ways I choose to be a sustainable practitioner. Colour and composition are aspects of weaving that interest me most. I find the process of producing a woven cloth incredibly satisfying. The possibilities that come with the choices leading up to the weaving process, such as material choice and threading, create an excitement towards the initial weaving of a warp.
Projects
  • Local Landscapes in Colour
Local Landscapes in ColourThis project explores seasonal changes in local landscapes through a final collection of handmade products. The inspiration for the project derived from a series of paintings which explore the colour proportions and details of my local landscape-Darwen Moor, Lancashire. These details are captured in the cloth, woven on a 16 shaft tabletop loom, using cottons and a combination of honeycomb structures and plain weave.
  • Rural Landscapes in Colour
Rural Landscapes in ColourThis project explores the moods and atmospheres of local landscapes, using cotton yarns to develop a collection of samples informed by a series of paintings. These paintings picked upon the subtle colours in rural landscapes emphasising their colours giving them richness. The context for the samples was rugs and hard furnishings. A warp with high ends per inch resulted in durable, hardwearing fabrics. The samples were woven on a 16 shaft tabletop loom at home.
  • Wallace and Sewell Live Brief
Wallace and Sewell Live BriefThis project is a response to a live brief set by Wallace and Sewell whereby a single painting was studied which later informed a collection of woven samples around an interior context. A painting by the artist Alice Sheridan was chosen. From this, a collection of paintings was created to develop a colour pallet. The samples make use of large blocks of colour and small contrasting line details which are representative of her style.
