As a spatial designer, I believe that a great design starts with a story with ups and downs like a theatre play. From an early age on I had a strong connection with hand craft and heritage. I loved visiting museums and historical buildings, I still do. I have a strong connection with historical buildings and historical objects. It fascinates me how things were made but most of all their story.
I started at the Art Academy with the thought that one day I would become a creative architect. But time passed by and my passion for heritage grew stronger. That’s why I had chosen to do my internship at PRS architects / GuM in London, They gave me the chance to work on great project’s like The Crime Museum Uncovered, Museum of Rural Life and The Revealing of the Charterhouse. After my internship, I graduated at the Art Academy Minerva with a Bachelor degree Interior Design/Architecture.
I believe that the key to every design lies in the research. In most of my projects I find inspiration from historical research. But also from my environment, a simple leaf on a tree can lead to a whole design.
The challenge as a designer is to transform the story into an inspiring and engaging design. As a designer, I like to experiment with form, function, and materials. In my work, I often go in search of harmony. And I love to operate detailed and precise.
I’m always looking out for a new challenge.
Projects
- The Underground at WarDuring my internship at Gum in London, I became fascinated by a newspaper article about the re-use of Down Street Station. After researching the location I came up with the following research question. How can I as a spatial designer tell the story of the history of Down Street station in an exhibition? And what will my role be as a spatial designer? Exhibition design is an interdisciplinary design direction in which experience design is very important. I decided to combine my knowledge of spatial design with the design methodology of scenography. The Underground at War is an exhibition space inside the former Down Street Station. The exhibition has been realized from archive material from various sources. The re-purposing of Down Street Station seemed to me an excellent opportunity to dust of the archive materials and give them a new life. The idea behind the exhibition is to show people a new way to experience the stories of the past. By using 2D image and convert them to interactive experiences Check it out on my website http://malissageersing.nl/

Awards
The Energize GasTerra Award 2015 Honorary Mention
Jury Report GasTerra Award Energize Festival 2015
In the context of the Energize Festival 2015 the Energize GasTerra Award 2015
dealt with the festival’s theme: The Value of Waste.
The Energize GasTerra Award 2015 Honorary Mention was assigned to:
“The Value of Waste: Coffee” by Malissa Geersing
Malissa presented her material research on coffee grounds waste in a welldesigned
poster, that clearly explained her extensive material research on coffee
grounds as a source for everyday products and sculptural objects. Malissa’s
poster gave a very clear insight into her research process: a process that started
with research on the coffee production chain - from growing coffee beans to the
coffee grounds that end up as ‘waste’ after making coffee. Secondly, the poster
explained how she combined coffee grounds with different types of resources,
the outcomes of which informed various designs for products and objects. The
jury especially appreciated the recipes that Malissa included for an audience to
reproduce her research. This is a very effective and practical way to share your
knowledge and validate your research outcomes. The jury concluded that
awarding this honorary mention would encourage Malissa to take the next
steps in designing new and original objects made from coffee grounds.
