Ruby Pluhar (b.1997, London UK) is a photographer who recently graduated from Glasgow School of Art. In 2017, she was chosen as one of British Journal of Photography’s Portraits of Britain, and was shortlisted for their Send Anywhere Award. Her practice moved into the vast desert in 2017 when she took part in an extensive five-month exchange program Land Arts of The American West moving around the states of New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Arizona in the USA where her experience of space, colour and form expanded dramatically, having profound impact on her image making. Since her graduation she has been the receiver of the SSA New Graduate Award, the cover artist of Scottish cultural journalism magazine The Skinny and been shooting advertising image content for Scottish knitwear designer Jo Gordon up on the outer Hebridean island of Berneray.
Ruby Pluhar’s poetic sensibility shapes her photographic practice. With an emphasis on portraiture, her work moves from her own personal series, to the editorial magazine spread to the photograph for fashion advertising purpose yet what is coherent throughout is there is a story to each image. Pluhar’s work responds to direct experiences and has an aesthetic of contemplation. A great feeling for colour and detail sculpts visual stories of each place or person she encounters. A sensitivity to her subjects makes for imagery that strives to reveal the essence of the moment, using colour as her tool to express the connections she makes. Her interest in space and colour has moved her lens in to a series of different environments to create rhythmic, evocative, otherworldly imagery that questions how we relate to the non-human.
Projects
- Caitlin and EilidhThis was first experience street-casting. I walked past Caitlin and Eilidh waiting for a bus on Argyle Street whilst leaving my flat in Glasgow. I was struck by their incredible locks and decided to introduce myself. We made conversation and exchanged contacts. The next time we met I planned a shoot up at the Rest and Thankful monument above Loch Lomond. I found and styled the outfits directing Caitlin and Eilidh naturally as we went for a walk in the beautiful landscape.
- EllaThis series uses the landscape to evoke the softness yet radicality of female friendship which is depicted through poetics of light, form and colour. Using the lens, I share with the viewer our experience of and sensitivity to the land which has shaped our character and deepened our connection to one another. Ella’s glowing hair is the beacon throughout, acting as the symbol of the stability she provides to me within the turbulence of life. She is the constant in the rapidly changing experiences

Location based shooting of Jo Gordon's Autumn/Winter 2019 knitwear collection. I shot both the landscapes and products on a model. I also retouched all the images to be used for the website content and social media.
