About me
From his first East London show ‘NAILPHILIA’ (the world’s first nail art exhibition) to his most recent ‘Conservation Couture: The Animal Ball’ which featured forty fashion houses including Burberry, Chloe, Jean Paul Gaultier and Mugler at the V&A Museum, Fashion & Art Curator Ryan Lanji has collaborated with the who's who in the Fashion industry and is now the name on everybody’s tongue. Now, the man behind HUNGAMA (East London’s Queer Bollywood Hip/Hop night) he has captured the zeitgeist of the P.O.C. community while DJ’ing for HE.SHE.THEY at Ministry of Sound, British Vogue, The V&A and Soho House. In the last six months his party has been featured in global press including VOGUE, i-D, Dazed, Noisey, Hunger, Time Out London, BBC, and The Guardian. Described as an ‘Indian Studio 54’, HUNGAMA (Hindi for 'Chaos' or 'Lit’) has created a space for South Asian Queers to express their individuality. The night has collaborated with international DJs and creatives including Samantha Togni, Chippy Non-Stop, Manara, Babbu The Painter and more. London’s youngest creatives and influencers in Fashion, Art and Music have been seen enjoying the sounds of Bollywood and celebrating the future of diversity and music. Merging Bollywood into Fashion and Art and fusing Club Culture into activism, Lanji has transformed from the role of a Curator into an undeniable cultural vanguard and voice in the POC and LGBTQ+ community. Ryan's work as a Curator is still continuing as he will be hosting guest lectures at The Tate, RCA and Selfridges and HUNGAMA will play the festival circuit this summer at LOVEBOX and Mighty Hoopla.

  • COLOUR AND CULTURE: CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF COSMETICS A LA CARTE
COLOUR AND CULTURE: CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF COSMETICS A LA CARTEABOUT COLOUR AND CULTURE: To commemorate forty years of cosmetic innovation and cultural significance, we are proud to announce COLOUR AND CULTURE: CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF COSMETICS À LA CARTE; an anniversary exhibition, which will take enthusiasts back to the birthplace of beautiful colours, choice, and creativity. It was 1973 when Lynne Sanders and Christina Stewart set up Cosmetics à La Carte with a clear message, “Find your look and be fabulous”. Suddenly, beauty had a purpose and offered women the chance to try products, in private, before buying - unheard of at the time – women were offered friendly, informed advice on colours and styles to suit their personalities, look and thirst for experimentation. 40 years later the same philosophy applies to our new generation of women and in the hands of some of the industries most innovative, unique and creative make-up artists. Cosmetics à la Carte has not only revolutionized beauty but graced the pages of VOGUE, Marie Claire and ELLE reaching out to trend led publications including Volt, Twenty6 and Tirade to name a few. Cultures finest including Grace Jones, Debbie Harry and Ana Matronic have championed bespoke products designed by Lynne Sanders at their Battersea laboratory in London. COLOUR AND CULTURE will be a vibrantly curated story of Cosmetics à la Carte spectacular history, including the first nude lipstick ordered by Princess Diana in the 1980’s, to bubblegum gloss and flush blush which Lady Gaga raved about. The exhibition will be showcased in four parts: taking the viewer through the brand’s impressive history as well as unveiling a rich and fresh take on product knowledge, demonstration, and experimentation.
  • DALSTON SCREENTEST
DALSTON SCREENTESTDALSTON SCREENTESTS EXHIBITION Exhibition run: February 12th - May 11th, 2014 A two-part exhibition at Dalston Superstore & Stunt Dolly Curated By: Ryan Lanji & Saskia Wickins This February Curator's Ryan Lanji & Saskia Wickins unveil a two-part exhibition celebrating some of Dalston's cultural icons through a modern interpretation of Andy Warhol's iconic screen tests. Between 1964 and 1966 in his studio known as 'The Factory' in New York City, Andy Warhol created over five hundred screen tests featuring anyone he deemed to have 'star potential'. These silent film portraits not only remain a testament to his eye for celebrity but acted as a time capsule for the cultural fabric of New York in the sixties. Dalston has been an area infused with creativity due to it's continuous support for art and music. Over the past years it's undeniable that this unique district of north-east London has unknowingly had the same Warholian effect on ostracised creatives in search for a home and an outlet for their eccentricities. Landmarks such as Dalston Superstore and new additions like Stunt Dolly have championed the heritage of Dalston and understand it's strength as a culturally mosaic community. Dalston Screentests will act as a two-part exhibition inviting eight of Dalston's most iconic creatives to Stunt Dolly hair salon where they will be captured in a screen test. The silent film portraits will then be unveiled in Stunt Dolly and continue to Dalston Superstore where screen printer Cassandra Yap will transform the short portraits into artworks fusing Warhol, Dalston and it's championed creatives. The exhibition will run from February 12th till May 11th and is free for the public. RSVP for the private view & all other enquiries to: art@dalstonsuperstore.com or enquiries@ryanlanji.com PRIVATE VIEW: ITINERARY PART I: The Screen Tests Feb 12th 2014 - 6-8pm at Stunt Dolly Hair Salon PART II: The Screen Prints February 12th 2013 - 9pm – late RSVP TO: info@stuntdolly.com NOTE: The Curator's invite the exhibition spectators to walk as a collective to the second part of the private view creating a 'Dalston Procession'.
  • HALF•TONE by Jez Tozer
HALF•TONE by Jez Tozer“Diversity of the cultural ecology is a desirable state of affairs, especially in opposition to the accelerating trend toward the uniform digitalization of all sensory experience, wherein an electronic ‘reader’ stands between experience and observation, and all manifestation is encoded identically” - Koren, Leonard. Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophy. 1994. In the 21st Century digital technologies have given us an unprecedented level of control in so many of the creative arenas – photography, film, music to name just a few. This enormous level of control eliminates the mistakes but it is often these mistakes, which allow the magical to happen within a work. These mistakes allow us to let in the accidental, the uncontrollable and the unknown into an otherwise highly controlled environment. It is very hard to consciously let go of the level of control we have become accustomed to in the digital age of image production and post-production. Inspired by the singular fashion direction of Grace Cobb, Tozer chose the halftone technique to align the images with the specific era and feeling that the fashion references. The exaggeration of the dot size draws attention to the physicality of the medium rather than disguising it’s intrinsic makeup and ensures the message of the story is delivered clearly and confidently with no excuse. Screen-printing allowed Tozer to relinquish control of the minutiae of density and to some extent composition at the final point of production. It opened a door to the analogue world and welcomed back in an element of the accidental, the uncontrollable and the unknown. HALF•TONE is a celebration of the analogue, the handmade and the authentic.
