Shakaiah is an indigenous artist from New Zealand who is currently based in London, UK. Shakaiah is of Māori, Samoan, Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Spanish, Tahitian and Tokelauan decent. Her multi-ethnic make-up drives her interest in different cultures.
Shakaiah has represented Aotearoa at a number of overseas festivals and competitions, gaining world hip hop titles as part of the Royal Family crews from Parris Goebel’s Palace Dance Studios and the NoMads Dance Crew of company Fresh Movement. She appeared in the New Zealand hip hop film Born to Dance and was selected to be apart of last year's indigenous dance residency in Banff, Canada.
Shakaiah is one of the choreographer's and dancer's for New Zealand band Weird Together and has danced for many other artists within New Zealand such as Piatolo, Triplelan, Stan Walker, Ria Hall & many more.
At twenty, London-based Shakaiah is already making her mark with international hip hop titles and vast film and television experience.
Shakaiah is currently running an international project, capturing the stories of many different artists by using photography, writing, movement and filmography as a way of telling stories. The goal is to travel across the globe capturing stories that inspire and empower others in one way shape or form. By doing this she hopes to use what she has learnt to later on start a creative arts therapy programme working with indigenous youth and reconnecting them with culture and the arts.
Shakaiah Perez is also involved with the fashion industry and is in the process of releasing more designs and artwork.
