Lead student facilitator- King's Decolonise Working GroupOver the summer, I got involved in the KCL Decolonise Working Group as a student facilitator, which allows students to work together with academics to create an inclusive and recolonised curriculum. Since summer 2020, I have been involved with module evaluation and revisions within my department, as well as being part of webinars involving academics from across the world. From these events, I was able to create a written report that was shared onto the university website https://www.kcl.ac.uk/

I was able to work for a week within the UK Government, interning within the Department of Work and Pensions. As the largest governmental department, I was able to see how this sector of the government supervises and oversees areas like pensions, budgets and benefits to administer throughout the country. I was also able to be a part of employability workshops, and policy creation exercises and presentations to those within the department. I was also to hone my networking skills and see what is needed to work within policy and governmental sectors, for both private and public sector work.

     - Birmingham, United KingdomInternship
. I began my interest in the world of advertising during my work in summer 2020, where I worked for a Birmingham-based start-up, Hyve, as a digital marketing and growth manager. Here, I was able to plan and delegate a 3-month long social media campaign for the brand, which allowed me to organise the strategy, but also see the need to differentiate communication for each specific media channel, here Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and the brand blog. Here, I was able to gain invaluable experience in writing professionally, and the importance of reaching out and connecting to the intended audience. I was able to learn how to tailor my communication to the team, to the wider audience, all for the benefit of the client and the success of the business itself. I completed a 3-month internship with Birmingham-based start-up ‘Hyve’, which works to support brands by identifying advocates and boosting sales in a company. This internship included me acting as a digital marketing intern- working on the company website and posting and creating content. I ran as a project manager and then ran new marketing strategies to help the business while under lockdown. I helped the development and implementation of a new social and digital strategy for the business post-Covid. This meant much of my role focused on monitoring the website and social platform traffic and managing the ideas we followed in order to grow our marketing to customers and the digital growth of the company. I also was in charge of boosting the social media to revamp and redirect the company ethos post-Covid. I prepared over 6 weeks of content for social media sites and 2 eBooks worth of articles. I worked as part of a team in a busy industry during a difficult time and being able to see the inner workings of a start-up. This was especially beneficial as it gave me insight into business and also allowed me to work closely with the business as a project manager, within the creation of articles and social media posts, as well as content for recently published eBooks in my time as a digital marketing and growth manager.

Throughout my university career I have been involved in helping students like me in the university community, specifically Black students who are already underrepresented and suffer from issues of experience and attainment. Since 2019, I have worked with my faculty (Social Sciences and Public Policy) as one of two student facilitators in the Inclusive Education Student Partners Programme. I have had this role since December 2019 and our yearlong contract was extended as a result of the reflection we got from our faculty connections. This programme went form insight gathering, conducting peer discussions (which turned into virtual calls due to the covid pandemic), researching and data presenting, to the delivery phase. In this, we have been able to create a pilot programme of ‘content flags’ in modules across the faculty to address the attainment gap and possible triggers for Black and ethnic minority students. In this role, I have been able to conduct the project from the insights gathering phase to the findings phase, then concluding to the delivery phase creating actions from over 6 months of insights gathering and data review. In December 2020, our cohort of 18 was awarded the King’s College London SED AWARD for student collaboration in student services and student success. This role allowed me to understand self-management and making the project based in mine and my other partner’s ideals. Using the research and discussions we had, we were able to create the project with our insights and tailor it to what we saw impacting Black and other ethnic minority students, as well as liaising with shareholders and university management to communicate our ideas and execute our planned actions and initiatives.
