Advice on a career change to a creative role - especially during this time?

Hey! I’m looking to change careers from nursing to full time creative role. I am a photography and content creator part time already but would like to move away from nursing completely.
I might be made redundant very soon so I now have added pressure to change careers and find a new job!
Any advice or tips would be amazing!

  • Hi Pooja, I'm sorry to hear of your situation. It is a rough situation for a lot of people. Wish you all the best with the switch.

You might want to check out the Growth & Grace Collective, they've been doing some free seminars on creative industries, pitching etc. You might be interested! @Jess Kumari Gosling co-heads it with @Mikaela Rice!

    Hope that helps! Marco
  • @Kel Smith Hi Kel, thank you SO much for your words of encouragement and insight into this. Great suggestion with the pharma companies! I'll definitely look into that.
Your reply made my day! :)
  • Hey Pooja, I'm starting a mini-documentary series with Creatives, Artists and Musicians. I thought maybe we can team up for this. You can find a post about it in my profile and I'm happy to share details if you're interested in

Take care and stay safe! :)
  • Best advice in the words of basketball great Michael Jordan: "If you can't stop thinking about it, don't stop working on it." Take photos every day, even if it's just snapshots in your home. Sharpen your skills through discipline to the process. Cull the best of these efforts into a portfolio. You mention project management in this thread; you already have tremendous experience through your nursing background. Determine what skills from your former career translate into an PM role: organization, stress management, adherence to process, etc. Any agency would be thrilled to have someone like that on board. Maybe even look into pharma/creative agencies like Havas or Publicis. Good luck!
  • @Simon Hamilton Hi Simon, thank you so much for that offer, it’s very generous of you! I have sent you a connection request! ☺️
  • @Lauren Welland thank you so much for that advice!! You’re right, I’m thinking I might have to start in a different role first and then move around. So grateful for the advice!
  • @Lauren Welland Hey Lauren! Thank you for your response!
I'm looking at roles around creative project management and continuing to freelance as a photographer. Thank you for your tips, I definitely agree - telling people about the change really reinforces it! :)

    Hey Pooja,

Conventionally, those are two slightly unrelated streams of work. But that’s not a bad thing. It’s just unusual to have a role that could do both those things for you.

Couple of things worth looking into.

So on one end, I’d put together a portfolio of sorts for your photography and content creation, if you haven’t already. Because that can always be a source of work and income for you as a freelancer.

On the project management front, it’s fair to apply to ad agencies, but I wonder whether it’s worth applying to creative production houses like Hogarth or smaller studios like Saddington Baynes too. Someone who is familiar with photography and retouching, could be an asset on those teams.

    Hope that’s useful.
  • @Tushar Menon Hey Tushar, thank you for your kind words, it’s a strange time right now.
Ideally I’d like a role where I am able to create content/photograph but also manage projects - so I’m looking at project management in creative agencies etc.
I can see you’re a senior creative and you’ve been part of some cool projects! Any pointers on how I can transition over to a role suited better for me?
    Thank you ☺️
  • Hey Pooja,
First off, I’m sorry that you are facing redundancy. That’s rough.
Are you looking to do more of the photography and content creation or are you looking to switch into a different field or a whole other creative industry?
