Any advice for a teacher who is looking to get out of education and back into working as a full-time designer?

I've been teaching for 8 years and wanting to get back into the creative industries some how. Most employers see "Teacher" and tend to not bother with me as an applicant. It's been a little disheartening to say the least. Any advice would be great. Thanks x

  • Hi John,
I just attended this event about how to boost your profile on The Dots which was really useful. The recording should go out this afternoon so keep an eye out for that, really useful. https://the-dots.com/events/how-to-promote-your-company-engage-with-your-followers-on-the-dots-with-founder-pip-jamieson-4646/attendees

I am planning to watch this one soon as it sounds really useful too.

Definitely connect with Pip. Where are you based? For example I live in Scotland so I use Creative Scotland as well as the Dots to look for opportunities. Is there an equivalent where you live?

What's your background? Were you a designer and then moved into lecturering? Maybe using that title rather than teacher would be more impactful? For myself I would think a lecturer in digital arts would be a great employee as they would have a real understanding of design principles and know the software really well. I hope this helps, if you'd like to talk more please message me :)

I have some other suggestions of platforms that might help but I don't want to overload you :)
  • Hi John, I would apply for jobs with publishers and Ed tech companies. They will value your teaching experience. I had a look at your profile and I've hearted your strongest work. Good luck, Marc
