Anyone have an advice on finding university work placements within set design?

Hi,
I’m Sasha a student studying theatre & performance design at LIPA but also exploring costume, props, puppetry and AV.

I’m currently trying to find my 2nd year university placement. I’ve had some industry experience outside of this module however haven’t much luck with getting responses since the module started.
I’m especially interested in editorial , music video and film production design but open to try anything!

I’m very new to this app but if anyone has any advice on how to approach this or knows of any good companies or people in the industry to contact I would be extremely great full.

I am happy to travel and work for free if that helps :)

Thank you in advance!

Sasha

  • Hard to give feedback without knowing your approach, when looking for placement i.e. CV/Portfolio.

I’d suggest looking at smaller studios, if you want to get into set design, try branch out into a placement at a museum to help design exhibitions.
  • The main one is network! Look for networking events near you, possibly travel to some if you're outside of London. Networking on here is super easy - If you go to explore and click 'ask forum' you can search related key words and it'll bring up all the posts with it in and then message and comment.

When you're breaking into an industry networking is so important and, sometimes, is the only way in without a qualification and experience. Take every oppertunity to network with people.

It seems daunting but find some creatives on here in that industry and message them asking to grab a coffee or have a google meets to tlak about their work and oppertunities - The worst they'll say is no. If you need any help or advice shoot me a message, I'm always happy to help

    Good luck!
