Applying for film funding is it a good idea to include fundraising (e.g IndieGoGo) in the budget or does that suggest you don’t need it?

  • Definitely go for it, but demonstrate why you think you will be successful in crowd funding. Don't just say "we will do crowdfuning" as though it is a magic money tree - show them you know what you are doing.
  • There’s nothing wrong with including crowdfunding in your budget for another funding application.

Say you’re trying to raise £10,000 and based off the size of your audience you think you can raise £3,000 through crowdfunding but you still need another £7,000 to fund the film. Funding applications will understand that you still need money from them despite the fact you’re also pursuing other funding avenues.

This is a very typical thing to do on larger budget projects. And often funding bodies like it when they see you’re already thinking about other avenues to help fund the project. The only concern that this may raise and you might want to address in your application is: what happens if the funding body give you the money, but then the crowdfunding doesn’t go as planned?
