Best ways to network during a pandemic, how have you secured new commissions this year?

I'm working with some third year photography students and they are all (understandbly) anxious about how they can connect with people in industry when we are all working online. I've so enjoyed seeing the resourceful ways people have been working together this year and would love to hear your advice to them. Thank you, Naomi x

  • @Javier Navarro Great shout to reach out to peopledirectly after a webinar/talk. Really important to make those personal connections.

Thanks so much for your thoughts, I'll pass them on to the students.

  • @Ross McClure Great to hear that you've made lots of new connections on here!

I've been finding it a useful space too.

Thank you for your feedback, super useful.
  • Hi Naomi

Finding new commissions is never easy and I find that they seem to appear without warning so it's hard to judge the inception of their appearance.

This year I have found work via the same old method - existing connections. Not that the work has come directly from those contacts but often from a friend of theirs who is looking for a skill that I can provide.

I would recommend they get online and start talking. This site alone has been extremely helpful this year for me, both in terms of keeping abreast of the industry via online events and webinars as well as introducing me to new talent.

I'm currently in post production on a new short film and both the composer and sound designer are people who reached out to me on The Dots. I liked their stuff, we talked over the project and then got to work.

It's hard when you feel like you don't have many connections but it's so easy now to start a conversation online and slowly but surely it will feed back to you and your work.

    Hope that helps!
  • Hi Naomi,
Securing projects this year has been definitely challenging, however I have found that joining webinars, online courses and festivals has helped me to spot interesting projects & individuals.
I usually note down the names and contact them directly, having done some prevous research.
Even if new projects are cleared at the moment, the seed is planted there and eventually something will come up.
    Hope this helps!
