Could someone please review my portfolio? I'm desperate for some feedback!

Hi there! I'm a junior graphic designer (or at least trying to be) but I feel like I'm doing it wrong.

I'm a versatile designer with skills in all aspects of graphic design so my portfolio may just be all over the place and not actually display my skillset very well. When applying to jobs, I'm just not recieving any feedback at all, just rejection letter after rejection letter.

Please could someone have a look at my portfolio and give me good honest criticism? https://kykee-designs.com

  • Hi katya,
So the things I have spot up on your portfolio that you can make it better in my opinion is:
    - Better sellection of your typeface, you need to find a typefont that works for you and it makes it easier and interesting to the viewer.
    - There is a problem as well with your projects, it's very time consuming. Everytime I want to see different projects that you have I have to go back to the home page, and select again another project. I would suggest to add a button for the next link of projects you have.
The rest I think it is quite good, I like your style :)
    Good luck with everything.
  • @Geoffrey Bunting Thank you so much for your input, I really appreciate that you've taken the time to give me an in-depth response. I do agree with what you're saying fully now looking at it from a different perspective!
  • Hi Katya - my first impression is that you need to separate out your design work and illustration work, I think it'll definitely be easier for clients/companies to navigate that way. Best of luck :)
  • So, initial thoughts: What exactly are you looking for? The first thing you land on is a statement that you're a "design creative" but most of your work is illustration. Similarly, the use of "I" and "we" is pretty confusing; are you a collective? If not, it's you and use that. You don't need to pretend to be a company when you're one person.

You need to be upfront about what you're doing. Your work is good, it's a great start, but if you're selling it as something it's not you're going to dribe people away. I would suggest you separate out design and illustrative content, brand yourself as a designer and illustrator, and work on developing your understanding and competency with typography as that's where your portfolio is really falling down from a design POV right now.

Something else I've seen is that you're using 99Designs - don't. It's a horrible and unethical platform, and if you're going to exhibit work from it don't tell people that the client didn't want it. Similarly, unless you're developing pre-made designs, don't include images with placeholder text. This is your professional portfolio.

The purpose of your portfolio is to put your work front-and-centre, and there are a few too many distractions here. But it's something that can be rectified by just taking a little more time with how you present things.
  • There's some good work on there, and some you could leave out. I got told to show only your best work and the work you want to do.

Don't worry, things will get better. I can say from experience!
