Creative Lead vs Creative Manager? Help!

Hey! I would love some advice on a job role. I am currently undergoing a switch in my company to a new role. I am currently Head of Creative, however they have restructured and brought in a Head of Marketing that I will now report into. I’m fine with this decision, however they have insisted there can’t be two heads of the same dept. I have a creative team who works below me and I am responsible for my company’s overall branding and visual identity as well as campaigns and design assets etc. what is the most appropriate job title that would be recognised as the highest authority to a “head of”?

  • I think if your aim is to be more involved in the creative ideation to end creative project and decisions it would be Creative Lead. If the aim is to have a more project management role budjects, hires, controlling timelines then I would say Creative Manager.
  • Hi Amy, these are not mutually exclusive roles, they have different responsibilities, functions and skills. it’s not unusual to have one ‘head of’ answerable to another. The question for your organisation might be whether the title for the new marketing role should be higher still, rather than‘demoting’ your role - is there space above for a ‘Director’?

Finally, design ‘manager’ is not the same as ‘lead’ in most organisations- the former tends to be a creative resource cum project management role, the latter is the senior creative role.

    Hope that helps.
  • Hey there!

It's crucial to remember that the hierarchy of these titles can differ among organizations and it is always helpful to explain your specific tasks and responsibilities to ensure a clear understanding of your role. Additionally, it is advisable to consult with your team and refer to your company's guidelines and employment contract to determine the most appropriate job title for your position.

But....Creative Manager, Creative Coordinator, Creative Supervisor and Creative Lead - roughly in that order.

    Good Luck ;)
