Do you think it's possible to be a designer and an artist at the same time?

  • @Tamryn Kerr Yes, I've already learned a lot from the Dots community. Thanks for your reply. Communication with you is priceless.
  • Absolutely! I'm a graphic designer and an artist. My mum is also the same. My grandfather was an Architect and my grandmother a Fashion Designer, both were artists in their spare time. More possible than you might think, I think you just need to have an *interest* in both.
  • @Tamryn Kerr thank you for your opinion and you are really right. I was glad to hear so many answers. all the answers inspired me.
  • @Morphe Digital Design you're really right. thank you for the detailed answer. this makes me move on and not doubt my ideas.
  • If you are a creative professional who makes things, some clients expect you to be an artist, and others expect you to be a designer. You can definitely be both but always the best to listen to the client - What they want from you.
  • Absolutely!. The two are not mutually exclusive, although you can certainly be one without the other. I have to use a ruler to draw a straight line (and I still can get it wrong!), but I can take other people's beautiful art and create impactful design. Typography, spacial awareness, colour sense, technical expertise, and lateral thinking are what I as a designer bring to the table
  • Paula Scher (Pentagram) has designed some of the most iconic brand identities in the world, and also paints amazing pieces merging topography and typography. She's an example of someone who has a clear separation between professional designer and personal (more artistic) practise, but with how the design world is embracing the visual fluidity that is usually assocaited with more artistic endevours its become more of a spectrum than ever before.
  • Yes definitely. There are some great artists/creatives that have done both for many years. Dave Buonaguidi is a good example. I'm sure there are loads more.
