Does anyone have any good recommendations for affordable cameras for filming and laptops (with editing software like premier pro)? :))

I really want to get more into making my own short films and photography, so I’m looking to get an affordable (but good quality) camera for filming and also a laptop that has editing software (that I can use to edit my films). Any recommendations or tips for starting out would be massively helpful! Thank you :))

  • Cameras depend on what you want to do. DSLR with video, Sony handycams, Blackmagic cinema cameras (quality film at lower price than most cinematic cameras)

DaVinci Resolve by Blackmagic design is my favourite editing (colouring, sound). It’s used in Hollywood on films so top end, available to download and use for free. Or purchase studio version for around £300 with some more tools, but the difference between standard free and paid studio is not too much.
  • @Monique Blake It's not easy. As for the laptop, you could try looking for a refurbished Macbook Pro M1 or M1 Max, but I'm not very familiar with the Windows world.

As for the camera, on MPB there is a decent choice of guaranteed used ones, for example you could find a Fujifilm XT3 and a Fujifilm XH1 for around £700 or even a Panasonic S1 for around £850.

Regarding lenses, a good way to save money could be to go for vintage ones and in this sense the Canon FD and the Minolta MD Rokkor-X are a decent best buy. At the beginning you could take a single but versatile lens: for Fujifilm a 24mm might be fine, while for Panasonic a 35mm would be an optimal solution.

Also consider installment payments to ease your expenses a bit.
  • I have a D610 Nikon, it's full frame and really great! For my laptop I totally recommend the Asus Zenbook S13 flip. I think this is slightly over budget but it's so amazing. Same spec as an apple mac but way cheaper and i love flipping over the screen to edit photos :) Hope that helps!
  • @Michelangelo Torres Hi, thanks so much for your response!

In terms of budget, for the total cost of the film equipment and computer, I think around 1.5k max but I’m not 100% sure what the prices should be so I’m not sure if that’s unrealistic 😅

Would you say second hand is a good option or does the quality become less?
