Does anyone have any recommendations for coding (web develoment/software engineering) courses in the UK that have helped you get jobs?

Is General Assembly a good option?

  • Hi Eliott, I'm not a coder but an old housemate of mine did a course with General Assembly and said it was both an awesome experience and a great route into the industry.

They are well respected enough as an organisation that most companies know the people who take their courses are going to be highly skilled and ready to work.

Have a look for them on here - they engage constantly with the platform so it should be easy to find out more!

    Good luck!
  • I've had peers take the courses and materials from https://www.freecodecamp.org/ and successful found a role afterwards or during.
  • I took General Assembly's Web Development Immersive course back in 2015 and can highly recommend it! My course was in Sydney, which I realise does not technically qualify for the "in the UK" part of your question, but I am fairly sure the UK curriculum would be the same as any of their other locations. I got a job about a month after the course. Of the other students in my cohort that decided to pursue software engineering as a career, pretty much all of them secured jobs in a similar timeframe. We received a lot of support from the team at GA with prepping for interviews, sorting out portfolios, and actually meeting prospective employers face-to-face with a "meet and greet" style event.

I found it really useful learning in a classroom style environment where I could ask questions and collaborate with people in my position. While I think it's technically possible to learn the majority of the content from other sources online (blogs, tutorials, youtube, online learning platforms etc) the problem is that a lot of it isn't that cohesive. It's also hard to weed out low quality content unless you have some experience (which you may already of course) so you could end up investing a lot of your time into dated/incomplete resources. It's not impossible though. It really comes down to how you learn and what suits you. It's worth at least playing around with some free online content either way.

As for other places, I used to work with a few people who went through the Founders and Coders bootcamp in London, which they also recommended. I hear good things about Le Wagon and Makers Academy too but I can't vouch for them personally.

    Hope this helps!
