Does anyone know of any paid UK based writing/journalism opportunities? I am happy to venture into any topic.

  • @george crisp It's an unfortunate side-effect of any creative community, unfortunately, and one steeped in the same language as seen on the Indiependent. It's just so hard to avoid and often hard to find unless you're really looking for it, which only makes it harder for young creatives desperate for work.
  • @george crisp The Indiependent actively notes that it's an unpaid market. It actively hits most of the red flags when it comes to how unpaid work is pushed on inexperienced workers.
  • Saying you're happy to venture into any topic is fine, but you need to be able to back that up with *some* writing - not necessarily published, but examples of the kind of writing your looking for, say, on a blog (not working for free for publications, because that's super bad for you).

I'd also caution against limiting yourself to UK opportunities as the money is more likely to be in US publications. For instance, Radio Times, a major UK publication pays about £90-100 for 1000 words on TV where someone like Slate will pay $350 for the same. So you should be looking to diversify where you're looking to pitch beyond UK outlets.

Feel free to message if you have a better idea of what you're looking to cover, I'll likely have some idea of who's looking for pitches in those areas.
